I've been driving all night, my hands wet on the wheel
There's a voice in my head that drives my heel
It's my baby calling, says "I need you here"
And it's a half past four and I'm shifting gear

When she is lonely and the longing gets too much
She sends a cable coming in from above
Don't need no phone at all

We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a wave in the air
Radar love

The radio is playing some forgotten song
Brenda Lee's "Coming On Strong"
The road has got me hypnotized
And I'm speeding into a new sunrise

When I get lonely and I'm sure I've had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above
We don't need no letter at all

We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a line in the sky
Radar love

No more speed, I'm almost there
Gotta keep cool now, gotta take care
Last car to pass, here I go
And the line of cars goes down real slow

And the radio played that forgotten song
Brenda Lee's "Coming On Strong"
And the newsman sang his same song
Oh, one more radar lover gone

When I get lonely and I'm sure I've had enough
She sends her comfort coming in from above
We don't need no letter at all

We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a line in the sky
We've got a thing that's called radar love
We've got a thing that's called
Radar love

I agree that for most, this is it. (and it's a great one) But for me, it's Driver's Seat by Sniff 'n' the Tears
A 50+ year old song so far ahead of its time we're all still catching up
The DJs at 96.1 KZEL reaalllyyyy liked this in the late 80s early 90s. It’s triggering a teenage hormone trip!
This tune never ages, still as cool today as when I first heard all those decades ago. Guaranteed to get a party going!!!
Too sad that they had to stop, esp the reason for it...
10 for the memories of AM radio as a ten year old and how badly I messed up some lyrics

Sounds like you were the teen rager we all wanted to be back in the day and fear now!

I had this rated at 8. What the hell was I thinking: permanent 10.
always nice to hear the full unedited track!

Yeah, we have cell phones for that now.

GREAT!!
It still totally blows my mind that this quintessentially classic jam -- one of my junior-high roller-skate night favorites, and I still love it today -- was done by a non-native English-speaking group that has perhaps had the longest reign of ANY rock band! I worship all their passion, talent, and idiomatic, artistic, musical, and linguistic genius!
one of the earliest songs I remember as a kid...
Awesome track. also the worst song on one of the best albums of the 70s.

Sadly, my childhood roller rink in Everett just closed down for new retailers to take its place.  But I can still remember hearing great tunes there from my childhood (think MJ, Madonna, Cindy Lauper, Billy Idol,, etc)

Long Live RP and any remaining roller rinks!!
GREAT TUNE!!! ICONIC!!!  Brings back memories!!!

Haven‘t heard this for ages.
An absolute Classic in ‘my time’ (early 70s) - and still is!

Riders on the storm for those rainy drives?
Its just that this kicks ass. almost 50 years after release

My gosh...this is what RnR should sound like

Fans prepare a tribute to Golden Earring, the rock band that unexpectedly ceased to exist due to health problems of guitarist George Kooymans (the man on the right).

The intention is to have Radar Love sound from as many speakers as possible on 11 March, the day on which Kooymans turns 73.

Get well soon George

In February, 2021, Kooymans announced that he was suffering from Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and would retire. Shortly afterward, Golden Earring announced they would disband.[3]

After 60(!) years of activity. What a run. Best of luck to George.

I don't mind this once in a while, just glad I'm not listening to it once a day on Classic Rock Radio.
Get well soon George
Will always remind me on vacation with my parents: skiing in France, 22 years ago...
American Rock 'n' Roll has to be embarrassed that this song came out of the Netherlands. Britain too. 'Course, if Golden Earring doesn't make it big with this one, then we might not have ever gotten Twilight Zone, which is another swing-and-a-miss from the traditional Rock powerhouses.

What I'm saying is, good on Golden Earring for exploding through a massive hole in Rock and Roll, twice, and absolutely killing it.

Dutch pride, drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk gave a drum clinic to me and some colleagues years ago. Great guy, band still playing in same line-up.
My 8 track did not have this cover.
59 years this band has been around according Wikipedia..  Wow

Thanks for clarification. Even me is too young, it seems. Can't remember anything before Barry and Cesar were there, thought they always have been.

I was in a bar in San Francisco back in 1991, there was a 3 piece cover band doing 70's stuff. One of the most incredible cover bands I ever saw. They did this and just nailed it. How they got that much sound and energy out of three guys astounded me. Every time I've heard the song since then I think about that experience. Will always be special for me.
yessssssssss.  Awesome!!!!!!!

I wouldn't say that. I can think of many other tracks that leave this at the highway entrance but I can see why you'd proclaim this the king of the drivies.

On my initial hearing many years ago, I misheard. I thought he sang 'nude sunrise.' Of course, that was a bit titillating but totally senseless.

I've heard this a zillion times. Of course it was an FM staple. It's never too old because it's always been unusual and unique and at least it wasn't another another another torture session of Rocket Piano Space Oditty Man .

Not too many better driving songs! Another solid album of theirs that flies under the radar love is Switch.
Ok mannen, volle gas!!!!
So, are we gonna hear the Scorpions next?
Wow, haven't heard this in about a day or so.
haha!  nice segue Bill!

My mind had already drifted into this song form Chris Isaak's "Gone Ridin"...   {#Smile}

Play Candy's Gone Bad instead.  Sheesh.
I have memories of selecting this to play on a jukebox in a pub in Douglas on the Isle of Man in 1975. It had already been a hit by then but still sounded good a couple of years later.

Still sounds good today to my ears :)

Yes.  Both great albums.  Have the British vinyl pressing of Moontan.  This version sounds a little off from what my ears are used to.

Got to see them when they toured for Switch.  A most excellent show in a small hall, the Allen Theatre in Cleveland.

The European version of the cover.

That's funny, but even worse, I thought he was "spinnin' to a nude sunrise.

The joys of low-fi, amplitude modulation radio.

I'm pretty sure that "Top Gear" fans voted this the best driving song of all time. Can't disagree.
Cranked way up to the dismay of my teenage sons!
I got tired of it back in 73 but when it comes on I turn it up.
Overplayed or not, it's still a half-decent tune.
Hey, BG, that was a fun drum beat segue !!

Remember seeing them live and doing this song at the Croydon Greyhound circa 74/5.

Much head banging was going on. . . and I remember leaving the gig with a drumstick (which is not an euphemism for a thin bird. . . it was a real drumstick)

Edit: ha ha! - Google pointed me here - https://www.songkick.com/concerts/476350-golden-earring-at-greyhound-hotel and apparently I was there 3rd March 1974.
