A handful of dream dust for my pirate
He can hear the pacific singing
The sea meets the light in his salt water eyes
Icy pictures of the water are captured in his frame

The paddles of night are unfolding
A mermaid's map floats by on the rolling green
Japanese fishing float carries my soul out to the whales
And out to the deep

I wonder about the herds of the sea
if they will hurt or if they will help me

Swimming with my fallen blossoms
I drink from the source above

A handful of dream dust for my pirate
He can hear the pacific singing

Nice!
Cracked me up.

Totally devoid of melody.  Stick to reading poetry in the coffee bars, Laura.

I'm not sure which dictionary you derived your definition of "melody" from - but this song is not "devoid of melody" by the literal definiton of the word.

Complete and utter ca-ca.

Yup...

Is it a common accent, some new mode of speech affected by indie hipsters or just general coincidence?
I'm curious.

More like an old mode of speech.  Very folksy, IMO.

Goes on a bit, don't it?

{#High-five}

Beautiful and deep.  Thanks RP!

There's a style of "quiet is the new loud" disaffected coolness with hypnotic guitar—i really like it—- started hearing it in 90's with Red House Painters, etc. i haven't heard her other stuff—-funny I like Anna Ternheim a lot, too, whom they say sounds like her.

I can't hear Anna Ternheim in this at all. Sounds more like Metric whatshername.

pretty voice sounds good in the morning——the lyrics and album art cover gorgeous.

Yes I wish we could hear something more from this album; this piece is really intriguing.

You apparently don't know what the word "melody" means.  You could try looking it up on wikipedia.  But don't feel bad, as crummy as the educational system in Georgia is, you deserve sympathy more than condemnation.

Why not add this to the sounds-like-list:

Anna Ternheim? anyone?

Bought the CD and like the whole thing.  Great stuff.

Good Stuff. This and That.

Yep.  I was about to post the same thing — sounds like Sara, especially the opening
Sounds exactly like Joy Harjo

Hmmmm only one song from this cd is in the RP library. Has anybody tried uploading other songs from the cd?

My other favorite of hers from the same album is "Cast A Hook In Me".  (The nautical theme will be apparent.)  You can hear it on her myspace page.  Fantastic sound she has.

She guested with them on their Austin City Limits performance too (the PBS concert show, not the music festival).

pure genius! ;)*

Wow, what an insult.

I rather like this.  Nothing like deathcrabs.

Every time I hear this I think it's a new Kaki King song. The guitar doesn't measure up, of course, but it's nearly the same sweet, cynical voice.

Nice, nice. And it's been a very nice set of music with Joni Mitchell, Jose Gonzalez, and now Laura Veirs. Soul soothing. Peace.
Beautiful, makes me want to move to California
love all the many layers, specially the percussion
Could be Deb Talan's little sister.

Yawn... {#Sleep}
sounds like Elton John should be singing  this

sounds amazing like Kaki King...
let me research that.

Yay, my first upload to RP to actually go on the air.  And no surprise at that.

Nor am I surprised this one whisked past the Listener-Review-Channel process and went straight for the main channel.  The sounds, the imagery — tell me it doesn't take you away with the first bars, the first line...  This is my favorite song of an artist with some mighty exquisite work (e.g. Cast a Hook in Me, and Pink Light, and Wandering Kind).

P.S.  Whiplash of disappointment when I read she was giving guitar lessons in Portland.  But that's west-coast Portland, Oregon, not east-coast Portland, Maine, waaah.

Thanks for sharing with us, Bob. Another great find for us all! {#Heartkiss}
her voice reminds me of joanna newsom, as well as the style of the song.
Great job Bob! Nice song, thanx for uploading it : )

sounds like she needs to hire someone to sing for her; someone with talent.  Voice-layering cannot mask an uninspriring voice.

Really nice song.
I'm falling in love to this guitar melody...
