Downstairs at danny's all-star joint
They got a juke box that goes doyt-doyt
The vice is nice, they stay in the back all day
But when the nighttime comes, hey-hey
There's this cat down there that makes a bad kinda soup
I come around struttin' my luck in my shoop coupe
Cecil gives me coffee
And he won't never take my coin
I say, " I got thirty dollars in my pocket!
Whatchoo doin' ? "

I holler, " Come on, Cecil, take a dollar!
Come on, Cecil, take a ten!
I've finally geared up into a whole buncha big ones
And you're actin' like I'm down-shiftin' "

He knows all the under-riders on the boulevard
They got to barefoot cruise when it's forty-weight hard
They look particularly dead-beat
Permanently pale
Cecil picks up his butcher knife
Waves it at the jail
The kid say, " I ain't got no dough, Joe, I just want some o.j "
I said, " Don't look at me " ( Cuz he was lookin' my way )
Cecil wink upon him some juice and some green
And the kid walks over and puts the quarter in the pinball machine
And he says, " Come on, Cec, gimme a dollar
Come on Cecil gimme five
I'm in a half-way house on a one-way street
And I'm a quarter past left alive "
He can talk about your people in a wonderful way
He can talk about your people 'til your hair turns grey
your sisters into mustard, she loves to walk the pup
she like pickles and a relish, she never gets enough
Hershey milkshake steamin on a stick, Get a Carter Blanche Sandwich
Oh lettuce get it thick... It not becuase Im dirty, not because Im clean
not because I kissed a boy behind a magazine...
Hey Boys, how bout a fight...Here comes Ricky with her girdle on tight..
She dont know your name, But she knows what you got, fromn your
mazzo balls to the chicken in the pot.. chicken in the pot...
chicken in the... DOOOWWWWOWOWN stairs at Danny's all star joint
They got a jukebox that goes Doyte doyte..finger snappin delux make ya bee bop
bap...Your a Ivy League... Your a Hep Scat...
You cant break the rules until ya know how to play the game
If ya wanna have a little fun you can mention my name...
But keep your feet in the street... Your toes in the lawn...
But keep your business in your pocket Baby, thats where it belongss..
OW come on Cecil take a dollar... Come on Cecil take a tip...
Do your self a favor if she offers it take it..
But honey dont give it away if she dont appriciate it... Dooown bownt bownt

Life awaits you.  Get onboard.
It's 1980, I'm 12 and listening to my sister's record and memorizing all these lyrics.  Probably acting out the song for no one too.

Way back in the mid-1980's, I saw her at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver. She was huge back then and it seemed like a good bet for a concert. Unfortunately, it was probably one of the worst shows I've ever seen by a top performer. She appeared to be seriously intoxicated and completely unfocused, and proceeded to spit loogies all over the place. It was gross. Glad she's still with us though. The song is still kinda fun.
If this doesn't lift your spirits call 911.

Loved the album but got REALLY tired of Chuck-E being overplayed. Would have liked it if it was treated like the B-side is kind of was...This tune is the single IMHO.

Sounds just as fresh as it did when it came out over 40 years ago!

Groovy track and an artist that I've never heard before.  Thanks Bill!

To me 7 - Quite Likeable       but just barely

Just LOVE Ricki Lee Jones!!!
Very enjoyable! Seems to be a new playlist: Leo Kottke, The The, Waterboys, Rickky Lee, Koko Taylor ...
not enjoyable

It struck me today that this song reminds me A LOT of Sheryl Crow's "All I Wanna Do" song -- yes, I realize this song predates the other.  Just drawing a comparison.

Holy moly! I thought you were kidding but no that was Rickie...

I always assumed that the clip was taken from some psych evaluation because the interviewer asks such an open-ended question ("What were the skies like when you were young?") that really seems to be more about the subject's view of her personal past than memories of skies. And it really doesn't sound like Rickie. Well, maybe it does...when Rickie is floating on something.

Good for her for backing off the legal matter: it is a cool song. Mind-blowing that it's 23 years old.
YES ...........R is the kind,.....toms lose is our gain..{#Dance}
Just upped my rating sounds great!
Hands down favorite boogie Rickie Lee tune

I never knew this was Rickie Lee Jones! Thank you for edifying.

I always thought this should have been another hit...oh well; luv this tune..

"I'm in a half way house on a one way street and I'm quarter past live and learn"

Love that...always will.
6 Grammy nominations and 1 Grammy win for this 1979 'jazz' album.  Tough to argue she didn't have something goin'.  Maybe the cover of Rolling Stone was the key.

How about playing Satellite?

I'm glad you didn't post a video to prove your point.

For just a second I thought this was Bitchin' Camaro, even though I owned this album. Now I think about it RLJ could do an awesome remake of that song.

? This wasn't even her biggest song. That being said, neither this or Chuck E's In Love are anything close to her best stuff.
This song reminds me of my Dad. When I was a tot Dad and his friends had t-shirts reading "Doit Doit" they liked it so much. I never knew the song's title until today.

Essence of hip, slick & cool. Trifecta.
One of the great albums of the 70s, solid as a rock. Rickie Lee Jones is one of the coolest female singers of our time. Not to everyones taste, but then she's not trying to be.

Great song and album from 1979. Be good to also hear \"The Real End,\" from THE MAGAZINE, even though most of the rest of that album is fatally pretentious. Still love ya, Rickie! ;)
Glad to hear Rickie Lee on RP recently, but I have to say that it\'s strange to hear these songs with no context. I\'m used to hearing the album straight through, and it sounds so good that way.
Trying just a little too hard to be hip.
Don\'t think I\'ve ever heard a Rickie Lee tune I didn\'t like.
Dang, what a great song from a great album. Thanks for playing it.
A phenomenal album, tons of Tom Waits association with this.
I would have given this song a \"10,\" save for the marbles in Rickie Lee\'s mouth.
Thanks for this Bill! It\'s been many a moon since I heard Rickie\'s one song wonder!
