Will you come to my house and you dance with me
You hold me tight and you kiss me too

You gonna kiss me baby
I messed around and fell in love, ooh yeah

When you call me up, you talk a long time
You talk to me over your telephone
You tellin' me, your comin' round over baby

EXCELLENT TUNE!!
Sounds like Ry Cooder on slide.
Is this a result of  the quality of the recording?. Buzzy bass. 😞
Y'know? Sittin  here, late Friday night, nice brandy, great headphones, this comes on.
Annd .. the foot, it starts a-shakin.
Then the rest o me starts doin the the same.
Yeahh - if there's a track that comes on that you can't ignore, its either a 2 (or below) or a 9 (or above)
Just IMO.
Was going to give it a ten, and low and behold, already did.  If this doesn’t bring you back to an island vibe…. I dunno.

Who'd you think it was? Cher?

This is John Lee Hooker?  Really?  You're not joking?

Wow.
Compilation 1998.  Originally released 1980.
80 some years old and still could sell being a player.  Damn.
Wanna know what's hip?  Listen up!
"I messed around and fell in love."
Say no more.
Well, it's OK, but it's not a patch on Shakey & Bonnie.

Thank you, John Lee.

Next time you play this one, Bill, follow it up with "Rapper's Delight" ("I hip hop, I hip hip hop it....") or something by The Tragically Hip.  It's only logical.
That pause ... between hip and pretty baby ... hits me like a ton of bricks.

Ticks all the boxes for me.

Well, here we are 9 years later and I have to say I totally agree with you now.  I apologize for calling you an idiot.

Soon as I heard that slide I recognized it.  Looked it up , sho nuff, Cooder.

I guess you got to feel seemingly simple music like the Blues and maybe know some of its history, to appreciate it.

Like in all genres there's indeed a lot of generic blues, but John Lee Hooker could move me, with just a few words and one chord, in a song that seemed endlessly. On the Waterfront, for instance.

This band is sublime in its musicality and subtlety. No drummer like Jim Keltner, to mention just one of them. An album with him on it, is always worthwhile.

Well said!
Alright some Hip without the Hop.

LOL playing Rilky Lea Johhhzz and then Joh' Le' Hoooughka  -  Welcome to the Blues School of Enunciation!
Ain't no one better, when it comes to gut bucket blues. Saw him twice. I do wish RP would dip into the early catalog of the 40's and 50's when he did this stuff originally.
This helps wake me up this morning!

This is a great CD with some wonderful guests : Clapton, Cooder, Raitt, Los Lobos and some guy named Jagger.  {#Lol}

Hooker <> Grinch: Separated at birth.
Hey, this guy is pretty good...
It's good to see the children (previous posts) have stopped bickering and calling each other idiots and we're gettin' down to commenting  on the music!
John Lee is a god.........and he rocked the fricken house. There was a comment about this sounding like a bad blues band with a common blues riff. That's OK, wish I could sound this bad with that much soul pouring out my voice........nuff said.
Ironically, shortly after this album was released, John lee fell and broke his....HIP!!!

Another idiot.
I love BoDeans singing backup vocals.

Your subjective experience is totally justified. Those who like classical music might not succeed in getting those who like this to like classical. I don't think, though, that this is pure blues, or I would like it more than I do. What genres are also represented in this song?
I love this *and* classical music (specifically, medieval music) and countless other genres. They are very far from being mutually exclusive.
*yawn* No, it isn't.
shake it baby...definite style all his own...what a blues voice
Hey Catmaven... I agree with your comment below, but, what is 'pure blues' ? It either is or it isn't the blues. What is pure classical, for example, or pure folk, or ...
Yes, this is Hip!
Had the honor of seeing this legendary performer shortly before he died. Words can not express what a wonderful experience it was!

listen! .... class ....
May I add my amens and hosannas to the growing angelic chorus endorsing the absolute necessity of RP playing more, and more, John Lee Hooker. Listen: the man does not need our props, not anymore. Not even while he was alive did he need our props. Radio Paradise itself is a very small thing next to this man's achievements. He knew what he was about, and fans of great American music (and not just the blues) knew it as well. So--there is, indeed, an absolute standard, and here it is.
John Lee is the man!

Did I hear a bit of "Rocking Good Way" Bonnie Tyler at the back end of that - I have no idea who plagiarised who - actually I care not as both induce coma.
This is crap
Just shaken' my tailfeathers LOVE MR. HOOKER
The HOOK! I started off with an eight and upgraded to a (rare) 10!! Ry Cooder on slide, Keltner on drums -- I think I died and went to heaven. Listen to that voice..
".....BONNIERAITT!"
Ooooh, this IS hip!
I like it like that! (Boom, boom, boom, boom).
There was nothing quite like seeing John Lee Hooker, in his later years, being helped onstage, into a chair, and then watching him wail the blues.
This is! Awesome boppy groove...
A killer John Lee song listeners would just dig the most, baby! I'm Bad, Like Jesse James. Off his Rhino Greatest hits CD. Try it, you'll like it. Thanks.
Oh yeah!!!!
call me up on your telephone, baby!
This is pretty damn hip.
Good show ole chap! Keep it eclectic!
It doesn't get any better.
This is (SHAKE Your) Hip! Hail, Hail John Lee.

You can certainly enjoy music on it's own merit, but when you feel the need to comment you really should know what you're talking about. The Hook was the living source and perhaps too potent for some who need their music watered down by generations of imitators. Long Live John Lee Hooker

Because it does matter if you were the first person to do it and then generations of people decided they liked it enough to imitate it.
This is, indeed, hip.
Come on man. Before you start commenting on music, do a little homework.

Uh, every blues band sounds like this because this is the way blues began in rural Mississippi. This "some guy mumbling" is John Lee F---ing Hooker. Yeah, just some guy who started the blues, which started rock and roll, etc.etc. Without John Lee Hooker, you ain't got nuthin. Come on man. Before you start commenting on music, do a little homework.
Any time you want to play more John Lee, go right on ahead :) If you want more uploaded, let me know, and I\'ll dump what I can; --d
Cool! John Lee Hooker was the coolest man on the planet. Ever!
Ry Cooder, the fabulous singers who once joined his band, Jim Keltner on drums, Nick Lowe on bass and.....Johnnie Johnson on piano. That alone is enough to be called a dreamband, but above that they accompany one of the absolute masters of The Blues, the late, great John Lee Hooker. Yes, that's hip! Man, imagine what it would've been like if this band had performed live.
John Lee and the others of his time tell it all!! You can play some more Bill, I know how old you are :D
Love this music. No radio stations play the Blues anymore. What a shame, since this is where all rock comes from.
