SRV put on a great show opening for Dire Straits!
Stevie version is fun. You can kinda hear how he's playing that wall of sound more easily than you can tell in the Hendrix recording. Jimi blended it all so seamlessly it's harder to tell what the heck he's doing. And Tommy Shannon actually breaking a sweat.

This is a testament to the power of a brilliantly-played electric guitar. The Jimi vs Stevie thing doesn't matter to me. I'll just take this on its own terms.

I have never been a fan of JH's music. I do have a certain respect for it though, since many artists I like give it such respect. Liking everything SRV ever did leaves me liking this song (at least SRV's version) and furthering my second-hand appreciation of what Jimmy did for music.
Taking nothing away from Hendrix, but SRV does take this song to another level, IMO. Magnificent.

This song is a perfect example of a song I hate despite the fact that I like the genre and admire the skills of the musicians involved. This is just a guitar song. These songs are about one thing - showing off. Boring. Make a good song, then apply your playing skills to make the song sound good. And that's what I like :)
Saw him in the early 80s in Berkeley, and this song was a moment of total auditory bliss and transcendence. Having said that, I've always thought the studio version was a tidied up but relatively bloodless take on the original -- which, IMHO, is the rawest, fiercest, most powerful guitar playing ever put down on tape. If I'd never heard Jimi's original, I'd probably think this version was terrific.

By the way, as the moniker suggests, I think this is one of the best rock songs ever. I probably heard the SRV version before I heard the JH version, but they are both amazing. And for what its worth, KWS does do a hell of a cover also...

Is SRV a MALE trip? It's so musically tight, danceable, desirable in every way and I don't see the *ladies* commenting. Is it a slight in their musical educations? I couldn't really give it a ten, but it was hard not to.

Hard to top the original here - but give SRV credit, he had the guts (and chops) to make a damn good try.

One of the things that sets him apart from most other rock guitar players is his incredible groove, which seems so obviously because he does it without any effort. It's something that comes natural or not, I guess.

It combines all the best things about KGSR (Austin), World Party (PRI), the old KLBJ (also Austin), and every other golden moment I've ever had listening to the radio (minus the COMMERCIALS!!!!). Its brought me more new bands I like in the 3 months I've listened to it then I've found in the previous three years on other stations. Leave it be!!!

I come to an eclectic station like RP because it offers me an eclectic variety of music which very much suits my tastes. Having clasic rock intemixed with power pop and classical pieces, and so much more is a hell of alot better than being bombarded with JUST classic rock all day. Especially if that classic roack station is just another clear channel clone. Plus, NO COMMERCIALS!!!!!!!

It really seems like your prime purpose in being here is to make negative comments, sometimes just to get people upset. If that's in fact the case, then you are a TROLL. perhaps if you made positive comments more often or were less extreme in your dislikes it wouldn't bother me so much. I've noticed other folks who will say something harsh about one song but then say something nice about the next. Plus their ratio of high to low rating is far more even than yours. Based solely on your own ratings it would seem you only like about one song out of every 6.5 songs played. If RP was like that for me I would have to leave.
I was 10 years old when I firsxt heardHendrix' Vodoo Chile in the late Sixties and I was mesmerized by the power of music and how it coul deeply touch your soul (pimp) I am sure that Stevie felt the same way
