Shine on you crazy diamond.
Now there's a look in your eyes, like black holes in the sky.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
You were caught on the crossfire of childhood and stardom,
blown on the steel breeze.
Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!
You reached for the secret too soon, you cried for the moon.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Threatened by shadows at night, and exposed in the light.
Shine on you crazy diamond.
Well you wore out your welcome with random precision,
rode on the steel breeze.
Come on you raver, you seer of visions,
come on you painter, you piper, you prisoner, and shine!
It just started playing as I arrived home. Parked and sitting in the car at the moment taking it all in, can't bring myself round to stop playing it!!
Amazing band! 😍
"Come on you target for faraway laughter,
come on you stranger, you legend, you martyr, and shine!"
I feel so sorry for the 83 people that gave this masterpiece a 1.
I don't. Most likely they are blissful in their ignorance. I feel sorry for the people who have to spend time with them.
For those unfamiliar, and/or interested, a great documentary about WBCN that originally aired the spring of 2022: https://tv.apple.com/us/show/w...
Available on Amazon, too. I can't find a free source anywhere. Also, for extended discussions with some of the principals, look up "WBCN and the American Revolution" on the YouTubes.
Thank You for the Info! PBS TV also had a documentary on the history of Rock Radio. They had a long section on WBCN. It is really worth watching & listening to in it's entirety!
R.I.P. - The last song played on the night Progressive Radio WBCN 104.1 in Boston, Massachusetts , was this classic by Floyd. This song said it all for it's 41 years on the air.

P.S. Just for kicks "I Feel Free' by Cream was the 1st song back in March 15th, 1968 on Freeform WBCN 104.1.

Bill- I need a rating above 10. Can I get something like a 20? Or maybe we each get one 11, and can set that one track as the tip of the top? Thanks so much for letting this crazy diamond shine on. =D
This song transcends ratings...
When my husband was in hospice toward the end of this life, I played this for him and he passed on after about one hour. He couldn't have been more at peace than hearing this album at the end.
That is beautiful. So sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story.
Although Dark Side of the Moon is an undeniably great album and the soundtrack for my early adolescence, I listened to this album with a bit more reverance. This was my "go to headphone"s album on a lonely night, reclined out on my bedroom roof watching the wind blow the trees back and forth.
This is my go to album when purchasing any sound equipment. Perfect.
Repeated.
Like a Clarion Call.
The final songs on WBCN were Cream's "I Feel Free," the first rock song played on WBCN in 1968, and Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," followed by a much-used collage of songs with the line "They're really Rockin' in Boston..." and station bits and ID spots used over the years, which then slowed to a halt before the final words were delivered, borrowing the tagline of the late Darrell Martinie, the Cosmic Muffin: "Over and out." Plink Floyd would be a great name for a cover band. 😁
No, better yet; Fink Ployd!
Reminds me to the high school time, winter 1977.
Used this music for a slide show which was made by me and some classmates acting in it.
I'm getting old.......
Rated with a 10
Same year 1977, while working for BSc finals, this reduced me to tears. I suppose 1977 is 1900 and frozen over !
While I do love Dark Side of the Moon, for my money this is the best album they did. Stop everything whenever it plays.
I will second and third that my friend.
This song always reminds me of my best friend that passed away to soon.
I hope that you still have fond memories of him (or her)!
Plink Floyd would be a great name for a cover band. 😁
Oh by the way, which one's Plink?
Plink Floyd would be a great name for a cover band. 😁
+1 for a cool band name, lol!
I’m a late becomer being a Pink Floyd fan. Really late. I was in my mid 40’s. I’m not ashamed to admit it. We grow, we evolve, we improve over time. I had to grow up to Plink Floyd.
Plink Floyd would be a great name for a cover band. 😁

That's put a lump in my throat. I too would willingly go into that dark night to this tune in the company of my life partner.
Not quite yet, mind :o)
What! Again! Had stop and listen! This has to have the most perfect opening couple of mins - thanks to RW and that's BEFORE the guitar comes in - a couple of mins of DG perfection and then even more RW and eventually the vocal!!
Thank you PF and thank you Radio Paradise
Adding to my comment from a while ago - the RW refers to Rick Wright!

That's exactly it. Music has an ability to connect and sooth, encouraging rememberance and reflection. I hope someone does the same for me.
I feel so sorry for the 83 people that gave this masterpiece a 1.
I don't!
Some people can't have a great day (or listening experience) because they've made other plans.
But watching out for bison wandering on to the road.
Last song, 'BCN. If you know, you know.
Appropriate
8,379 ratings - more than 5,000 of them are "10". That says something about how this music affects many of us.
Add another 1,028. A year ater standing at 9407. Will probably be the first song on RP to reach 10,000 ratings. This song does grab peoples attention either for good or bad. Solid 10 from me.
Roger's homage to Syd. How much love can you deal with?
Missing a genius you knew who falls before your eyes must be one of the worst of all human pain.
Saw this with my dad as he faded into the hell of Alzheimer's the last couple years of his life. A once brilliant man. Painful indeed.
Missing a genius you knew who falls before your eyes must be one of the worst of all human pain.
Don't be so hard on yourself.
Ha! Perfect response!
WE will all shine on to The Great OUT There
Clearly Pink Floyd's Magnum Opus!
After Echoes!
Heard that final broadcast live, recorded it, then lost the recording.
Highly recommended: Carter Allen's history of the station, "Radio Free Boston."
I had just posted "nearly four decades" but it was actually a little longer. Thanks for refreshing my memory.
Don't be so hard on yourself.
Bahahaha!
nooooooooooooooooooooooooo
can't cut grass now
The Crazy Diamond
Syd Barrett?
Also 61 and I also think this is one of if not the best Pink Floyd number. Whole album is in my top 10 along w/Dark Side. I remember when I first heard this album in my middle school days. Nothing like it then nor now!
The sax solo.....how it just soars.
The big 3, DSOTM, WYWH and Animals.
Thank you PF and thank you Radio Paradise
But the fact is, there may be nothing better than the classic era of Pink Floyd. They are musical bliss. This shit is transcendent. How did they do this? Again and again? This band has so many songs that force you to drop everything and just get lost in it for the duration. The first time, or the thousandth time.
10, 10, 10.
More than that, how can you listen to RP and give this a 1? I understand it might not be of your liking, but give it a 1? Maybe I think too high of my fellow radioparadisers. Classics cannot be put into a scale, that's what makes a classic a classic
So, maybe they accidentally rated it 1, trying to make it an 11: and got truncated. This masterpiece is clearly deserving of the notional "11"
I feel so sorry for the 83 people that gave this masterpiece a 1.
They're all happy over there at the home.

Interesting how this track is simply named "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" on RP when it is, technically, just parts 1 through 5 of the full two-track "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".... I would argue that RP should either play all 9 parts under the "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" title or rename this track to include "parts 1-5" in the title
And I would argue that you should get out more
Don't be so hard on yourself.
My brother was a muso and this was a fitting tribute for sure.
Brain Damage?
A deep and unfaltering love for the music of Michael Bolton?
Great song, but maybe play some lesser played Floyd songs?
More Floyd in general is always a good thing...
Is there any other rock station that's ever rated TWO books celebrating its legendary status? Hardcover, no less!
Of course then one year we were hanging out with a new one that seemed off, and when the snotty nosed brats started their whining the lights came on, the radio want off, and I moved past them. (but later albums were still excellent!)
And to think Gilmour was 29 when he wrote this. What were we all doing at 29? I certainly wasn't carving a permanent niche in the pantheon of music (or anything else for that matter). Godlike indeed.
What a wonderful example of his feelings about Syd...

maybe to be virtuous
those first four guitar notes
Ill see you after this song brings me back
Yes, unfortunately it does.
If only the next song was allowed to fade in.
This song is probably my preferred one since so many years. I’m 61 now and still have so much impact on my feelings. Thanks Radio Paradise

Sadly, yes 😉

Agreed, but as of right now there are 97 ones, and 5105 tens !!

Today is New Year's Eve.
Late afternoon. Dark and cloudy. Rain and snow coming down.
Hark...there is the clarion call from Pink Floyd. It will explain it all.
