There goes my baby
There goes my only one
I think she loves me
But she don't wanna let on
Yeah, she likes to keep me guessing
She's got me on the fence
With that little bit of mystery
She's a complex kid
And she's always been so hard to figure out
Yeah, she always likes to leave me with a shadow of a doubt
Sometimes at night, I
Wait around 'til she gets out
She don't like workin'
She says she hates her boss
But she's got me asking questions
She's got me on the fence
With that little certain something
She's a complex kid
And she's always been so hard to get around
Yeah, she always likes to leave me with a shadow of a doubt
Just a shadow of a doubt
She says it keeps me running
I'm trying to figure out
If she's leading up to something
And when she's dreaming
Sometimes she sings in French
But in the morning
She don't remember it
But she's got me thinking 'bout it
Yeah, she's got me on the fence
With that little bit of mystery
She's a complex kid
And she's always been so hard to live without
Yeah, she always likes to leave me with a shadow of a doubt
Well a shadow of a doubt
Well a shadow of a doubt
There goes my only one
I think she loves me
But she don't wanna let on
Yeah, she likes to keep me guessing
She's got me on the fence

A New Wave heartland deep cut classic. This would be the lead track on most rock albums.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Damn the Torpedos was the first concert I ever saw. I've enjoyed listening ever since. What a great band.
I need to purchase this, the only copy is a dubbed cassette somewhere in storage. What a great album, not a bad track on it, IIRC.
First album I ever bought at the age of 15 (what took me so long?).
Fond memories.
Fond memories.

this bloke cannot sing
I've just donated which is somthing I've been meaning to do for a while. I press pay and RP starts playing this; instant payback thanks all.
Oh and it's Tom so it's a 10 from me.

I thought I was the only one who liked to do that! Also, Dylan - fun stuff!
Fun exercise: sing like Tom. Always makes me smile. Thank you RP!

I like a few early Petty songs, nothing in the last 20 years though. But what amazes me is that people complain like hell about Bob Dylan's voice and don't say anything about TP's nasal whining.
Exactly!

White girls they're pretty funny . . .
Sometimes they drive me mad -
Black girls just wanna get phucked all night, I just don't have that much jam.
- Jagger/Richards

brilliant segue from Town Called Malice by the Jam, Bill!...even if you clearly "cheated" with your mixer

Two minutes ago I said to myself, "time to log onto RP, probably playing Tom Petty."

yeah, but this earlier stuff is less annoying.

Hearing this brings a great big smile to my face! Much needed in this day and time. Thanks, P!
TP was the first concert I ever saw, 1981, I was 13 years old... He's got so many great songs I never get tired of hearing Petty!

It's just you.
Is it just me or does Tom sound like Chris Rock in this song?
It's just you.
One of my favorite early Petty songs. A true Rock-N-Roll artist.
This song has the 2 best elements Petty ever put together of the "Byrds' jangle" with his singular style.
PLEASE START PLAYING IT AGAIN!

Nice to hear one of the more obscure tracks off this album.

I love this song, and I, for one, like Tom Petty's voice. So there.

Uuuhhhhh, it's Westerberg. And you try singing clearly and in tune after about a dozen years of a 2-pack-a-day habit!
I was just on another page looking at everyone's comments on Paul Westerburg's awful singing on The Replacements song "Attitude". I find Tom Petty's voice to be extrememly annoying, funny thing is, I think he makes great songs.

See now—that's why RP rules. A great 'deep cut' from a truly great album. It brings back such specific memories of blasting songs at ridiculous volumes on my buddy's new high—end stereo (circa 1981). Denon tuner, Denon amp, Harmann-Kardon turntable and massive Profile speakers. Man I love this song!

Tom's the best (singing thru your nose) type singer out there!
Classic Petty - I love the early stuff.
An interesting, yet strange song to follow Ani Difranco\'s \"Gravel\" in the playlist.
if you get the chance, one of the best live acts you will ever experience.
Some mighty fine rock songwriting here. The changes, the chorus and bridge are all so non-cliched and the lyrics have such punch. I like that it has a sub-title, as if Tom couldn't decide which worked best.
Also amazing how a band can make a great front guy even better, ala Gram Parker & The Rumour, Rod & Faces and of course Elvis & The Attractions.

My first concert was TP/H at a high school gymnasium in Reno, NV just before this album came out. I think they were testing new material on us.
