Sweet smelling summer nights
Of wine and song;
Dusty pavements burning feet.
Why am I crying, I want to know.
How can I smile and make it right?
For sixty days and eighty nights
And not give in and lose the fight.
I'm going back to the ones that I know,
With whom I can be what I want to be.
Just one week for the feeling to go --
And with you there to help me
Then it probably will.
I won't go down
Acting the same old play.
Give sixty days for just one night.
Don't think I'd make it: but then I might.
I'm going back to the ones that I know,
With whom I can be what I want to be.
Just one week for the feeling to go --
And with you there to help me
Then it probably will.
And they were absolutely AWESOME in concert back in the day.
I saw them in '79, front row, and thought I was late finding them then. They did, indeed, put on a magnificent show.
what other group does hard rock flute?
Focus! Both groups do a great job of hard rock flute!
" I'll be honest.. fellas, it was sounding great. But.. I could've used a little more flute. So.. let's take it again..."
..."nevermind, i'll just overdub it backwards. you'll see, it'll blow yer mind"
But damn, ALL OF THIS is just awesome!
I cut my rock and roll teeth on this album somewhere around 4th grade.
Great album
I was just about to make the same comment! That Jethro Tull hasn't been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is wrong. Not to denigrate any other artists (even though I do), but come on!
They should have been let in based on "Thick as a Brick" alone.
I am a Tull fan, no apologies. This is the first album of theirs I heard, and it took me a couple of listens to understand the appeal, but this song is what convinced me this was a great band indeed. Play more Tull!!!!
Benefit put them on the map to stay IMHO.
Jeeze. I was introduced to this album when I was in the sixth grade by the kid across the street who was a freshman in high school, who was introduced to it by his older brothers. Is this the album that they 'popped up' when you opened it? I sure got a good musical education from those kids.
p.s.
real music lovers know better than to worry about who is in the 'rockandrollhalloffame'. It means nothing.
That would have been Stand Up, I believe. As I recall, I gave it away when I left home. In some hindsight, this band was quite good for a while. The era when this showed up was a time when the music coming out had a freshness that's not much in evidence today. Maybe an ole farts' perspective, but objectively the continued bursts of creativity in the the late 60s to early-mid 70s was unique. Anyway, by my standard of objectivity, subjectively viewed.
And they were absolutely AWESOME in concert back in the day.
Yes. Sober, tight, disciplined, high energy. One of the best from the period where in hindsight many of the concerts were mediocre or just plain awful.
I always knew when a concert sucked back then because I simply wanted to smoke more hashish or weed to smooth the concert's rough edges.
Their absence from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame where Janet Jackson is a member renders the place useless. Hall of Shame.
Whaaat?Even Yoda likes it....&ct=g

Foo Fighters "My Hero" --> this.

Probably because the RnR HoF judges died from extreme case of boredom after hearing a single Jethro Dull tune.

Opinions are like assholes blah blah blah etc.....having got that out of the way here's mine..... Most of Tull was great and still continues to be so. Aqualung wasn't over rated, it was loved for good reason as was Benifit. Punk sure hasn't held up very well and for good reason.
It depends on one's perspective I guess. There are still hundreds of successful "punk rock" bands all over the world, and new ones starting all the time, so it appears to be "holding up" quite well, regardless of anyone's opinions or "reasons".
Yes, Tull has some lyrics that can be meaningful to some people if they listen. Thanks RP, you are as great as my friend promised!
I had loved them before, Stand UP, etc., still do to this day. Thanks Bill! Happy Birthday to me.

With whom I can be what I want to be."
Oh hell yes! Trouble for me is....I never went back. Not that I've lost any memories of those times. It's just that when you're looking, and moving, forward on your adventure you never realize, until it's too late, that for the most part the doors you walk thru close and lock after you pass thru. That's the price of movin' along...
And as Sir Kurt of the Vonnegut clan would say; so it goes...

So you're quite certain it's not you that's oblivious, then? Because as with wgsu_1978, your musical tastes appear to be a subset of mine. I am unclear as to how that makes your tastes superior. Perhaps it's just as simple as "you don't like Jethro Tull" (at least from Aqualung onward). That sort of thing has been known to happen.
I honestly do not no why I should even bother to reply to you since you found it necessary to insult me in a previous post-but here it goes. Most serious music critics recognize the Ramones ,the Clash,Iggy Pop,-both solo and with The Stooges-The Damned, and The Stranglers among many others,as being critically and musically successful Punk and Punk influenced artists.I had the displeasure the other day of listening to the title tack from Aqualung. To me,it has not stood the test of time.Besides being being a lazy Zeppellin riff rip-off(who in turn were Blues and Rock artist plagiarizers.)Ian Anderson has a truly terrible singing voice when he (over)emotes. While the first three Tull ,albums were good to excellent,Aqualung shows an ego-inflated Tull overreaching and coming up way short-a trend which has continued, with the exception of Minstrel in the Gallery-to the present day.
I like Tull and most of the punk artists you name, and I find it odd that you can't find it in yourself to do the same. Everything you said about JT is dead wrong, IMO. Why does liking one band/style/era necessarily mean disliking another? My college radio experience spanned Tull, prog and punk, and it helped me to break free of the musical constraints I grew up with. I hope you get a similar opportunity. Because you're here I think there's a good chance.

Perhaps so, but are you in turn oblivious to "their" choices in music?
I happen to like Jethro T, but not all of it, since I can only stand on one leg for so long.
I am chary of blanket statements, Dennis.
I like the playful pun on my last name.Putting that aside,I have seen so many inferior songs by 60s and 70s legacy artists slightly to hugely overrated whereas many other deserving artists from all of modern rock decades not getting the fair recognition they deserve.

Today...nah. All ya get now is the formula of "thud and drone", boring, monotonic, souless, hookless.

Way back then, I bought this on the strength of "Teacher," and wasn't too disappointed—as I recall. At some point Reprise runs a contest either through Rolling Stone or local radio: first one to submit the total time of Benefit wins something. Easy, right? Here was the catch: on the original pressing of the album, there are no track times. I imagined then, and even now methinks, the suits at Reprise getting a chuckle out of very-stoned-and-very-confused-hippies trying to figure out the track times. I thought then—and I think now, "Fuck them."
Well, my parents had the albums—-but I did not overhear it. I'll give it a 9.
I hear ya. The first three Tull CDs are great. And then came Aqualung - another classic. I started to lose track of them
after that.
Agreed
