I met a guy the other day, he said he had it all figured out
He claimed he was ecstatic, he proved it with a shout
"I like hippie chicks", he said, "They're not so damn dumb
They don't sing like Ethel Merman, they don't imitate nuns"

"They comb their hair with porcupines and loofah their feet
And they become indignant when you threaten them with meat
Their windows grin like pumpkins filled with candles and beads
Their beds are all futonic and there's babies on their knees"

"But my mother wears a hat", he said, "Extruded from a tank
And my sister reads good housekeeping and worships at the bank
My grandma loves Pat Robertson, says he's it, that's that
And my wife says I'm a lunatic but hippie chicks are where it's at"

He told me this while revving up his brand new pick up truck
He wore a leather hat and shades above a twelve pack gut
"I know where they got hippie chicks, they're all in Santa Cruz"
Then he jammed a tape in his Blaupunkt and drove off born to lose

'Cause although he got the message he was deaf to the news
There are no chicks in Santa Cruz

There are no chicks in Santa Cruz. Oh?

I'd like to hear Zappa's version. If were possible, that is.
I can hear his intonations in my head. It's brilliant.
Not that this version isn't good.

I think the previous poster was referring to a stylistic similarity. The song is a Kottke original & as far as I know Zappa never covered it (it came out just a couple of years before his death).
Would be improved if it had a melody.

I came here to post the same exact comment.  Kottke does Zappa, and that is a good thing.

Which begs the question: why so little Zappa on RP?  Licensing issues with Zappa Family Trust?

What's a "Blaupunkt"?

Blaupunkt was a German-based manufacturer of electronics and audio products.  I assume these lyrics are referring to a tape deck in a car.

You've never seen Bull Durham?

Hippy chick not currently in Santa Cruz, but I do miss it...
Hippy Chicks.  Another reason to love your farmers market.

Sounds more like something that Zappa would have done. Very entertaining. I really enjoy a "serious" artist having some fun!

2 out of 3—music, lyrics, voice—is a pass.

His voice undeniably has a... certain... rough edge to it, but it's a voice that reminds me of William Burroughs'—and that, delivering deadpan humour, redeems the song immensely.

reminds me of MC 900foot jesus
Top tune. Fine album.
How have I never heard this Kottke song? It's one I would not wish to listen to all that often, but this is great.
Lyrics:

"He wore a leather hat and shades above a twelve pack gut"

Twelve pack gut! I'm so stealing that!

Listen to the lyrics! This is fun.

Yay Hippiechicks!!! (and yes, I comb my hair with porcupines!)
"They comb their hair with porcupines and luffas for their feet." LOL
Crikey, is it just me (and the mid-afternoon here), or is this one long streak of misery we're wading through, in this sequence, Bill? Blimey!
Funny lyrics
Hippie Chicks Rock (and roll!)!

I like his guitar playing but the voice!... Huh!
You're not alone in this. In the liner notes he wrote for his "6 and 12 String Guitar" album he did acknowledge that his voice sounds like "geese farts on a muggy day."

Try his first album "6 & 12-String Guitar", or the mellow "A Shout Toward Noon", or the more modern (and my favorite) "One Guitar, No Vocals".

I saw a chick in Santa Cruz just the other day.... or at least I thought I did..
nice groove. fun lyrics.
It was Lou Reed that came to my mind when I heard it.
Am I the only person who thought this iggy pop?
¡HIPPY CHICKS!

He was deaf to the noose or was that news - Leo Kottke
I'd heard Leo Kottke's music for years, but this was the first album I bought. Great stuff!
Zappa is what first came to my mind as well........ Love it!
Sounds like he's aspiring to be Bruce Cockburn
Well there you have it. "Hippy Chicks are where it's at." Let's see. Now where can I find me one... :-k
Catchy. Love the style.

Amen! I don't even worship at the bank.
his voice sounds like duck farts. loved that line off the back of 6 & 12. This CD is excellent and the Album of 6 & 12 was excellent also.

That's what I thought of when this first came on!
come on boys and girls, this is so zappaesque. Just to raise me up a crop of Dental Floss Raisin' it up Waxen it down In a little white box I can sell uptown By myself I wouldn't Have no boss, But I'd be raisin' my lonely Dental Floss Raisin' my lonely Dental Floss Well I just might grow me some bees But I'd leave the sweet stuff For somebody else... but then, on the other hand I'd Keep the wax N' melt it down Pluck some Floss N' swish it aroun' I'd have me a crop An' it'd be on top
I love this track. That's all I have to say.

I have listened to Leo forever. I think he is getting even better. I like him exposing his sense of humor. He always seemed way too serious in the old days.
Come on Sliff, though it's always been dry, Leo's always displayed a sense of humor.
"They don't sing like Ethel Merman" : D
Great song . . . reminds me a lot of Chuck Prophet.
Nice fit after Stuart Davis\' witty lyrics.
