Adjectives on the typewriter
He moves his words like a prize fighter
The frenzied pace of the mind inside the cell

The man on the street might just as well be
The man on the street might just as well
The man on the street might just as well be

Outside, outside the walls
Out there you don't hear the echoes and calls

But the steel eye, tight jaw
Say it all, say it all
But the white paint
Plastic saints
Say it all, say it all
Say it all, say it all, say it all, say it all
Say it all, Say it
Somebody has got to say it all
Somebody has got to say it all

I'm so nervous
I'm so tense
My heart can't forget about this self defense
The air is so hot
And my breath comes fast
I thumb the cool blade
But I know this can't last
(so nervous)
(so tense)
I thumb the cool blade
But I know this can't last
(so nervous)
(so tense)

Outside, outside the walls
Out there you don't hear the echoes and calls

But the steel eye, tight jaw
Say it all, say it all

My comment above says it was posted 18 years ago (below).  And in my comment I mention an earlier comment from Leslie for this song.  Leslie's comment is not on this songs earlier comments.   This time frame is when the "glitch" happened and RP history was lost.

But I digress and still hear Marcus Welby.

Well I do work with a Dan, though not at the transit center where the Tweaker Cam was filming (I think the cam feed is dead though....) just a bit north of there.  It's another reminder to me to NOT DO the 'bad' drugs....people be doing some CRAZY shit high on meth...makes for interesting lunch hours of people watching.  Long Live RP!!

I actually came to comment on what I think this song is about, at least some of the lyrics seem to point towards it being a song about tweakers.  Maybe due to where I work (in the city of Everett, WA) with a large tweaker population (https://youtu.be/aniMsN8mc4Q N. Everett Tweaker Cam...seriously!!) I sense that "shadow stabbing" could be what some of the crazy activities I see these folks doing on a far too regular basis.

The whole concept of Cake is 99.999...% tongue & cheek.
Cake is great but hard to rate (Byron).  I like them so much more for their sound and their collection of songs than for any particular song.  Any individual song is very good but not classic, and yet as a whole the band is classic.

There are very few musical groups that I really don't like, Cake is one of them. There is something about the music and singing I find very annoying....

I'd love to see a CAKE show...and damn if you aren't showing even more similarities between us.  I first heard CAKE from a friend, who played "stick shifts and safety belts" for me; I was sold in one listening.

I'm also a HUGE fan of the "I will Survive" cover they did.  Something to do with the incongruous vocal style and passionate lyrics.

One would imagine if they were going to aspire to have the "real potential" of a band who came before them they would select a band that was moderately relevant at some time.

I remember "Going the Distance" getting a lot of airplay, does that count as a "Rock Standard"?

The music of this tune is passable. The phrasing of the lyrics are also passable. Not a terrible song when you consider that this is CAKE. Welcome to Geezers for Cake:  LOTS of good cuts on Comfort Eagle, esp. the eponymous cut and "Girl with a Short Skirt".  This one is good as well.  There are LOTS of folks on this publog who don't think they're cute unless they are being snide.  They're wrong:  the aren't cute then, either.

Good track off a real good album. I prefer Symphony in C, but this is a fun one.

Guitar, bass, drums, vocals—and just a skosh of keys. Quiet, clean, great rock'n'roll.

Cake constantly surprises me.  Not sure why, but as a band I've never been willing to say I "like" Cake, and yet I can see their value in tidbits like this (surprise!).  I've had several people tell me they're brilliant, so I'll assume I'm just missing the big picture, even though I see hints of forest through the attractive trees every occasionally.  I guess its because my first few exposures to them looked like stunted scrub oaks rather than redwoods ;)  Ahh, I love the smell of overused metaphor in the morning.
See, I got this album because I heard "long line of cars" on RP of course!

I'll have my Cake and eat it too!
The only thing better than Cake is...

...more Cake.

Love this song! This and Love You Madly are my favorites from this LP. All the songs are great...Pretty Pink Ribbon is my least favorite but the SFX make it up for me. CAKE was fantastic at Wakarusa, btw.
