His singing sucks? This has got to be a joke, fucking kill yourself kid. This comment pisses me off probably worse than any of the other moranic comments on here.  GO. FUCKING. KILL. YOURSELF.

Awful. Lame. Weak. Pathetic. Who needs this? What's the purpose? Might as well play guitar to 12 bar blues with the lyrics from a commercial jingle.

I've got a commercial jing for you, shut the fuck up and go kill yourself.

You people are mentally fucking retarded, I literally signed up for this site JUST TO SAY THAT, I found these rediculous posts while searching for the video of this song on the net because YouTube had to take it off due to legal restrictions.  There are not enough words in the english language to describe how fucking awesome this cover is, not only is it undoubtedly the best Dylan cover of all time, but it is one of the best live songs Clapton has ever done, also anyone who criticized Clapton in general, should be shot. Pop tunes? listen to Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs all the way through, and if you don't have a siezure due to the awesome guitar duets between Allman and Clapton, then you should go shoot yourself. I'm not kidding.

And all you people that smoke SRV's pole, yes you should, (he's the shit) but only after you've smoked Claptons pole, SRV is literally thinking about coming back to life and personally beating the shit out of every person who has said he is the "shit", and Clapton "sucks", it would piss him off THAT MUCH.

I would love to go on and on with this but the Ravens just missed a field goal that could have beat brett favre (I hate you) and his gay undefeated ViQueens, the two of these situations are just too much to handle and my hands are shaking so bad in anger that I think I need to go shoot up some morphine and wait for the Chicago asswhooping that is will ensue in just under 4 hours

All you people that rated this song under 10, and/or posted a negative comment on here, go die.

What the hell people? Have any of you heard the other versions of this song? Clapton has done an incredible version of this tune. If any of you actually played in a band you would understand the power of building tension in a song. A great blues style song should be like sex. It starts out nice and easy and builds to a spine tingling climax. He teases the crowd through the verses, gives them a taste of intensity in the choruses until he blows them away in the end. It's called dynamics folks. Led Zeppelin is a band who used dynamics a lot. They did ok as a band.. Clapton's phrasing on the electric guitar is second to none. Flowing and smooth as silk. Willey Nelson would be on the other end of this spectrum. Not so smooth... Anyway, in closing.... This is one of the best covers of a Dylan tune ever done. As far as Clapton's voice.. His guitar is an extension of his voice. They are one. Watch his face during the video on youtube. You can see how he feels each note on the guitar. Wake up and smell the coffee folks. It doen't get much better than this for a blues fan...
As much as I love Clapton's guitar, this just doesn't have it.

God can do as he pleases.... He doesn't need *YOUR* approval....
Christ this sucks.

Say what you will, but that is some smokin' guitar!
What a fabulous cover ! ooohhh WWEeeee
Shut up and play your guitar. Jeez he sucks when he sings.
I'm not a Clapton fan. He's a great pop musician, but not the musical god he's made out to be. That being said, I do like this tune. He's got feeling in his playing, and feeling in his vocals. This tune makes me re-think my negativity about Clapton.
Lot of fabulous covers of great Dylan tunes through the years. Occasionally someone (esp. Hendrix) will reimagine the tune and create a masterpiece that stands on its own. I have to agree w/ most folks here that this isn't close to being one of them.

Clapton has made a habit of doing this kind of thing with his own music ("Leila{spelling?}", "Cocaine", "After Midnight", et cetera, ad nausum. I think he does it so he won't get bored.
So we get bored instead!
its obviously all about the licks and not about conveying the emotions of the song - give me Dylan's "crappy" voice any day
I'm sorry you guys think Clapton is soulless. The guitar solo in this song made me come across the room to see who it was! It has shades of Johnny Winter, BB King and Santana. Nothing wrong with it in my book.
Bores me to neverending tears ....

Hollow, empty blues designed to sell cd's to yuppies. No thanks.
Abso-figgin-lutely. This guy just saps every ounce of soul out of the blues when he performs. Excellent studio musician, but beyond that, he has no Elvis in him. None at all.
Slowhand is good, lazyhand is phoning in. Seen EC too many times to fall for this phony riff

You got that right... Why is it, that I can picture him singing this at the "House of Blues (tm)"
Wow!
Wow. What can I say that hasn't already been said? Clapton is God on Guitar. Pity I'm agnostic.
It's All Right, but everytime I hear Clapton I can't help wishing SRV hadn't got on that helicopter. I'll take Stevie over Eric any day.
also, most covers of Dylan seem to enhance the melody in a way that his singing style can't do. But this one seems to lose the melody entirely...

in my mind nothing beats the original on Freewheelin'. I think the guitar does it in for me--not that it's not incredible playing, but I think it just overdevelops what was a simple, beautiful song.
I think that's it. I miss the simplicity of it. And the focus on the bitter, bitter lyrics.
Never new I was a yuppie. Guess I must be 'cos I like it :)

Dude, I'm with you. Still, there aren't too many stations I can listen to for covers like this -- it's interesting, at least...

I'm inclined to agree
a unique spin..........interesting a little more umph

For as musch as I like Clapton, in my mind nothing beats the original on Freewheelin'. The Rice Brothers did a fantastic bluegrass version of the song a few years ago.
not sure about this version, there's a wonderful live version by Joan Baez and Indigo Girls, also a Nick Drake cover.
It's nice to hear Clapton again, especially since he hasn't done anything since Journeyman. I actually forgot the guy could play.
ooooh yeaaaah this guy can play

I'm surprised by the negative comments about EC not being "true" to the song. I think Clapton ripped this one in a heartfelt tribute.

Oh. Did I mention watching Clapton tear off lead licks like this gives me the same feeling "way down in my soul" I get seeing Barry Bonds hit one out, Michael Jordan drain a 30 footer, Nureyev soar across a stage? The guy is just the best human on the planet at what he does.

Who cares what might have been "intended" in the original? Slavish fidelity to the original--whether in a music cover or cinematic adaptation of a book--is the mark of a good cover band, not a good artist. I think Clapton's doing the song justice by covering it with a different mood and the stamp of his own remarkable gifts.

You guys said it better than I could. Clapton is a master. I totally appreciate his take on this classic, giving it his unique and sublime twist. Gimme more of that Clapton-style blues!
Another over-"vamped" cover by clapton. Irritating at best IMHO.

Mike Ness does a MUCH better cover of this song!
I agree. I like clapton, but he made this song sound very genric.
Listen to the crowd on this album and you can tell Eric nailed a good one. This song, Lou Reed doing Foot of Pride and Neil Young doing Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues are the highlights of this show.
Mike Ness does a MUCH better cover of this song!
I never quite was impressed with the performance of that song until Bryan Ferry did it recently but I believe E.C. has surpassed that version. Great choice.
Man, Eric has got it going on! WOW I was giving him a standing ovation at my computer.
Love the oiriginal, and love this version too... Clapton playing the blues electric and loud is one of Rock\'s finest offerings! (pimp)
One thing about Eric Clapton is his vocal style has always remained the same - I frequently hear/read the same complaints about his voice - no energy/emotion etc. yet he endures. I personally enjoy most of what he does.
I have an accoustic, slow version of this song being covered by the Indigo Girls and Joan Baez... LOVE IT. This one, not so much.
\"Just say no.\"

Agreed in a big way. This version is missing what indeed, even Dylan himself is missing these days: humor and vitality. I love this song but this just plain stinks of generic blues rock.

Got to agree w/ many of the posters here: Clapton\'s version misses the mark of the song by a sizeable margin IMHO.
Proofs, that whenever Clapton gets his act together he's still a true (blues)master on guitar. Even his (angry!) singing is ok on this one. Little of all this passion on his latest albums, though. Loved his rendition of Love minus Zero, which he also played during this event, even more. Sounded like it was made for him. Beautiful guitar solo's on that one (too). A shame it didn't make it to be released on this album (like many others).
Geez, how 'bout a little context here kids? This live recording is from the "BobFest" (thanks, Neil) allstar tribute show in New York a few years back. You don't even want to know who all is in the band on this track. Suffice it to say, a retroactive anti-personnel bomb here and we might as well forget about the last 40 years of blues and rock. Bob seemed to enjoy it (as much as you can ever tell how Dylan feels about anything ); the musicians clearly enjoyed themselves. If it doesn't float your boat, fine. Move on. Oh. Did I mention watching Clapton tear off lead licks like this gives me the same feeling "way down in my soul" I get seeing Barry Bonds hit one out, Michael Jordan drain a 30 footer, Nureyev soar across a stage? Yeah, no argument there, his guitar work is great on this one. Maybe it's just me, but I just don't like the interpretation of this particular song, roadhouse blues just doesn't seem to fit in with the spirit of the original. Sorry, but when I hear this all I can think is "Blues Brothers".
I dunno, I kinda like the groove and Slowhand still can play.
A cheesy blues rendition of a classic Dylan tune. Doesn\'t treat this song with the respect it deserves, IMO.
I like Eric Clapton, but this song just leaves me flat. There\'s no vitality here at all.
