On the hard fast train, on the road to gain
Something gets right through to your telling bone
There's a sudden itch, an electric twitch
Sometimes I swear this body's got a mind of it's own
This is the naked truth, this is the light
There's only one place left to go
Auberge (Auberge)
Auberge (Auberge)
You meet the silent type on a windy trail
With a shiny cloak and an unseen silver dagger
You can talk till you ache, give yourself one more break
You can tell by the look on his face that it just doesn't matter
'Cause this is the naked truth and this is the light
There's only one place left to go
Auberge (Auberge)
Auberge (Auberge)
Oh, give me a weekend, give me a day
Don't like what I'm seeing though I hear what you say
Think with a dagger and you'll die on your knees
Begging for mercy, singing: Please, Mister, please
'Cause this is the naked truth and this is the light
But there's only one place left to go
Auberge, Auberge
Auberge (Auberge)
Auberge, Auberge
Auberge, Auberge

As Christmas approaches, I always think of a Chris Rea song, and it's not this one.
When I still lived in blighty, whenever me and wifey poos went for a long drive, we would never stop at a service station, instead we'd get of the motorway and find ourselves a nice little pub, and have a pint and basket of chicken or scampi or sausage or fish and chips.
My favourite singer, musician. And my favourite album!

His song "Texas" is well worth a listen... really interesting music video too about Soviets vs. Americans.

I'm always amazed by the number of people who hate/berate the music that is played here.
I think there is a pretty high standard for the music selections on RP.
I used to hate the Cowboy Junkies, Chris Isaak, ELO, Janis Joplin and countless other bands. After continuing to listen to RP, I have come to like all the groups I have mentioned above.
There are obviously a lot of people here that like the music you hate or it would not be being played. And first impressions of music and musicians can change over time.
If that doesn't work, just use PSD button.

Aubergine = vegetable that Americans refer to as an "eggplant" even though eggs are almost never purple.

one of the worst singer I know, and the music is less than simple. Worst song they could play he wrote when his daughter was born (what was her name and title of the song). Cmon RP, you play so many talented not so well known artist, please please avoid him. Whenever they play him on german radio I switch off or change ...
This song hooked me on the second bar. Very good.
Awful music. Dire Rea.
My introduction to Chris Rea was God's Great Banana Skin. Loved that album, especially the title cut. My next album was Auberge. Again, loved the title cut.
That's all i wanted to say.

If you like Chris Rea, get the concert album Road to Hell & Back (two cds). I was at the Paris concert from the tour from which this selection came - he was great live and this selection is fabulous. And, this was his last tour (due to medical issues).
Where can I find his version? All iTunes has is a tribute.
This guy rocks thanks RP

Thanks. Your post had me hunting for the meaning of this song, and I came across this interview with Chris Rea in which he said:
"Well, you don't have to be French to say the title, because the title is an Englishism, anyway. 'Auberge' literally now in France means a motel, it's pretty down-mark, not particularly up-mark, in France it's not particularly romantic. For French people an 'Auberge' is somewhere where they had to stop off because they didn't make it home in time, so they don't particularly feel great about 'Auberges'. But for the English this is romanticism attracted with the word, and the translation of it meaning temporary resting place, and that's exactly what this album was for me after 'The road to hell'"
This song will forever remind me of the Kings Head (I think that's what it's called) on the A120 between Ipswich and Norwich.
It has (had?) an Auberge sign on it and did excellent nosh.

Ahhhh, Radio Paradise...playing the stuff everyone is afraid to play!
Chris Rea is a talented, prolific songwriter/vocalist/guitar player.
I bought his debut album in 1978 (Whatever Happened To Benny Santini) and almost every one since.
Love it, thanks Bill.

One of musics unknown or at least unrecognised guitar heroes.
Seen him many times always a treat.
Listen to the last track, on Road to Hell, Tell me There's a Heaven and not cry . An encapsulation of why music can be so emotional , and a prime need to us.

Unapologetic about loving this song. Chris Rea has always been a sort of "out-of-hearing, out-of-mind" kind of artist for me, but every time I hear one of his songs, I do the forehead-fwap and think, "WHY don't I have more of his music?!" Note to self: GET more of his music, dummy!

"Eggie" looking aubergines.

The name eggplant developed in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada because the fruits of some 18th century European cultivars were yellow or green and resembled chicken or hen's eggs.

The intro to Road to Hell contains all kinds of radio traffic broadcasts, including a sample of a traffic announcement from the Belgian public radio. It's amazing how familiar that sounds even after 17 years.
Hmm. This must be what Chris found at the end of that Road to Hell.
