I met a little girl and I settled down
In a little house out on the edge of town
We got married, swore we'd never part
Then little by little we drifted from each other's hearts

At first I thought it was just restlessness
That would fade as time went by and our love grew deep
In the end it was something more I guess
Tore us apart and made us weep

I'm driving a stolen car
Down on Eldridge Avenue
Each night I wait to get caught
But I never do

She asked if I remembered the letters I wrote
When our love was young and bold
She said last night she read those letters
And they made her feel one hundred years old

I'm driving a stolen car
On a pitch-black night
And I'm telling myself
It's going to be all right

I drive by night
And I travel in fear
That in this darkness
I will disappear

Always has, for 20+ years, always striving to make it better.
Hey Bruce. When Patty does your song you gotta be flattered and proud.

Eh?  I don't get why the lyrics suggest the guitar shouldn't be in tune.
Has to be one of the best compliments Bruce Springsteen could ever feel. For Patty Griffin to produce this version of his song.
Wow!

Boy, Bill is hitting us with a lot of sombre/melancholy tunes this evening.
Love her, but that guitar is NOT in tune !

Indeed, Ms. Griffin has the whole package: songwriting, voice, evocative style. Plus she hangs around with some guy singer who was in a pretty okay band himself.

Alas, no more. By way of Robert Plant, "when I had four pints, she (Patty) couldn't recognize  the Black Country Welshman I became." This is how relationships end.

Really enjoying Radio Paradise!!!

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

How I'm feeling right now, love you Patty.
It is going to be alright.

She could sing the phone book and it would be spellbinding

I just want to say that using the rp app with the 'lossless' sound is a ridiculously good sound experience. I'm just using a laptop and a couple of the larger 'Oontz' bluetooth speakers coupled for stereo, and boy, that is really good sound on this song and all the rest of 'em.
Glad to be listening here in Michoacan. Thanks.

Patty Griffin is at another level ... so much insight

That Bruce is really Good
{#Devil_pimp}zesty , bruce once sd this was the saddest song he ever wrote
Not enough of a Springsteen fan to have recognized the song right off . . . until I listened to the first line. Still didn't know it, but thought, "Man, that's gotta be Springsteen."

Man, does that guy write a song.

Great version.

I'm a big Sprinsteen fan but I think I like Patty's version more.
Patty Griffin + this Bruce Springsteen lyric = double godlike rating.

Hard to comprehend The River was released so long ago.
Am I the only one here to think that this guitar is a bit out of tune?? Seriously.
I love her voice, I love the depth she brings to the lyrics--regardless of whose words they are. A wonderful composition and evocative  production. Patty Griffin is a true gift.
very boring
Very nice song!
Nobody could write sad songs like the boss did on the River
michaelmitchell thank you, I think that is great!  Cheers (I'm raising my glass of "Goats do Roam", you fit well with this set: Patty G, Boss himself and Saint Richie Havens)

My version. Not trying to be a star. Just adding some "ambience".

Nice job!

beautiful version of this, and makes me appreciate the song even more
OK version but doesn't match the starkness of Bruce's version. His interpretation really emotes his commitment, loss, futility and distance as the song unfolds.
Great Springsteen song

Springsteen actuall released this song twice.

It was written for the Nebraska album, but was released on "The River" cd ( in a slighly jazzed up arrangement.)
Later Springsteen re-released the original version on his "Tracks" cd.  This version was very Nebraska like.

fyi- He also released "Born in the USA" ( which was also written and recorded for Nebraska cd) on the Tracks CD.
Much better version than the hit version. In step with the Nebraska style.

You're right—very "Nebraska" like. Great album that was under-appreciated when it came out.

I'll have to listen to the alternative version of "Born in the USA." Can't imagine that it would have worked on "Nebraska", even in a stripped and slowed-down style.

You're an artist Bill! Thanks!!!

Well said! Puts me in mind of my own crumbling marriage...a super-slow train-wreck...
I love Patty Griffin but I'm just not feeling this one.

I don't agree at all. Patty sings beautiful and she makes the song mysterious and desolate. Well done Patty!

indeed ... so beautiful.

Patty Griffin can do no wrong. Love her voice and passion. For me, there is always a moment for reflexion and a pause for self renewal when she sings, don't know why.

I think this could be my most favorite cover of any song. She's so good... and actually shows off Springstein's writing better than he does.
yeah, definitely adds something to the Springsteen version. A female voice gives it another dimension. great. thinking of listening to the original now...
man...is that a SAD song or what... awesome.
Reminds me of a song from Badlands: A tribute to Bruce Springsteen\'s Nebraska album.
Anytime a woman can sing and play a tune....I\'m in. Dar, Tori, Norah...etc.

ahh, wish I\'d heard this when it was on--just found it on today\'s playlist. more patty griffin anytime please
What a toughing, beatiful voice Ms. Griffin has.
wow. Bruce\'s version was great, but wow.
Looove Patty... Forgive my ignorance, but who did the original?
I think this song is awesome to begin with and Patty\'s voice is so emotional, it just makes this cover great.
She certainly inhabits the car.
One of my favorites on KFOG was: OMD "Electricity" The Lightning Seeds "Pure" Nick Heyward "Kite" The theme? Benjamin Franklin
