Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
And you crawl out of bed and you crawl out of bed
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
And you look at the moon where the window is
And the stars shine, and the stars shine, and the stars shine
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And way down below in the sun belt
And the telephones, and the telephone, and the telephones
And you look out the moon where the window is
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And some of us breathe in the brown ground
Where the worms clown, where the worms clown, where the worms clown
Way down below in the sun belt
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And every night when you lay down
You fall flat, you fall flat, you fall flat
Some of us breathe in the brown ground
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

So we're all asleep in the same dream
In the snort fort, in the snort fort, in the snort fort
And every night when you lay down
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

Santa Claus modified snow peas
On the sun roofs, on the sun roofs, on the sun roofs
So we're all asleep in the same dream
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

If you look in the mirror it's your father's face
And the thin grin, and the thin grin, and the thin grin
It's Santa Claus pulling up snow peas
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And there's tears in the bank and the credit card
In the back yard, in the back yard, in the back yard
If you look in the mirror it's your father's face
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And once in a while when the wind blows
And the heart winds, and the heart winds, and the heart winds
There's tears in the bank and a credit card
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

But there's lint in the pocket and a breath mint
Or a car key, or a car key, or a car key
Once in a while when the wind blows
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

And your kid has a face like a walnut
From the ice cream, from the ice cream, from the ice cream
But there's lint in the pocket and a breath mint
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed
Everyday in the morning when you get up and you crawl out of bed

I first heard Leo Kottke play guitar about 26 years ago and I first heard Leo Kottke's voice 4 minutes ago. 7.5
I listen almost everday RP. AND WHY, Why am I hearing this for the second time in 20years? My Bad. Great song. RIGHT!?

Pepe Hush
That right hand is amazing.

I know there is a lot to comment about on this song, but to me, that right hand seems to be having the most fun of all.
Leo, with all due respect, you are an amazing guitarist, and God's gift to a fretboard. Please stick to that. Thank you.

I’m waiting for Storm Large to cover it.
Jack gets up, and hits the skip button.
Jack Nicholson?
I am Jack's alarm clock
Hi,

mbe has proven my theory — I like every song that he & God hates!  (How does that work?)

I don't think the Pixies did this song. It's a Leo original, but there's no evidence that I can find that they've even done a one-off of it.

I think he's putting you on.

I presume you mean Leo in general - this one didn't come out until 1989...
Go Leo!
Gag. This again?
Leo Kottke's on the radio, on the radio, on the radio... Nah, not for me thanks
too good not to smile
A song every father should hear. The studio version is much better, though...
"Snort fort" - I like it! :o)
Story of my life.

9 to a 10! Perfect, with excellent words.
Definitely not my cup of tea
this is just plain annoying....
Is this a scratched cd?

I like it, but it's a little bit too long/repetitive.

Great songs are not always (usually, even?) happy songs. This is a great song. -mt-

Yes, but it has been quite a while. This blows. He should keep his mouth shut and just play.
I think he's had too many hash brownies
How many listeners does RP have in central Asia? That's where people are rising just now.
i thought this was going to shawn mullens (ins?) trying to re-create his one hit 'rock-a-bye' or whatever. i was going to rip on it ... then i saw it was leo. so i'm holding my tongue.

Everyday in the morning I want to hear this song. And I want to hear it and hear and hear it, everyday in the morning when I get up out of bed.....
good morning RPeeps!!

Agree completely

After having seen him live on numerous occasions, I am still captivated by just about anything of his. His presence and electricity on stage definitely carry over for me.

I Agree! So boring yet so true!
The guy does a spot-on delivery.

I agree. Dozens of great leo-songs and they choose this one... I want Bean Time! And do they change playlists? Jan 17: 7:08 am - Leo Kottke - Jack Gets Up 7:02 am - David Bowie - Heroes (live acoustic) 6:56 am - Robbie Robertson - Broken Arrow 6:51 am - Emmylou Harris - Where Will I Be 6:47 am - The Staple Singers - I'll Take You There
I am annoyed and hypnotized at the same time. Well, mission accomplished Leo. Good work.
SNORT FORT?!?!?!?! AHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

j/k a fun little ditty
I like it ... it was a great transition from David Bowie... I would like to see Leo with Bruce Cockburn Some great guitar playing
Add me to the list of people that like Kottke on guitar but think this sucks the big one.
I've been a Kottke fan since the early '70's. But this song is NOT one of his best. In fact, the longer it goes on the more I hate it. Please make it stop!

Snort Fort!!
On a really early album's liner notes, Kottke compared his singing to goose farts. I really like his work and we share the same home state, but he has much more to offer than this cut.
Snort Fort
Wild thing You make my heart sing My heart sing My heart sing
This song needs more cowbell needs more cowbell needs more cowbell

I saw him once when he was so drunk he didn't finish any songs... rambled on and on about death... said his wife was at home having his first child.. it was pretty bad.. the next time though, he was great.
I don't know what to think. I like it!
Ani DiFranco on steroids?

I love this - the guitar work (of course), the lyrics, and his truly unique voice. I think, over the years, he's really learned to write songs that are better suited to *that* unusual instrument of his!
great tune...but in the evening/afternoon? lol
What's not to like? Defenite 8
Ah wuz gonna give this a "8", but I awready done done it! :goodvibes.gif:
I like how the monotony in his voice mirrors the montony of life, especially getting up in the morning.
My kind of poetry!
Loved that one, and Great big boy. on the back of the 6 & 12 album ( dating myself now ) he states that the reason he does not sing is becuse he thinks his voice sounds like duck farts. wonder if he still thinks that. fretman wrote:
The later T-Bone Burnett- produced albums are pretty good, with more electric bass and broader instrumentation. The studio version of this tune comes from the mid eighties, originally on "My Father's Face" (line from this tune) album. The earliest album on John Fahey's Tacoma label (6 and 12 String Guitar) is pretty amazing. Some of his work in the late seventies is not as strong from a content point of view. But his guitaristic prowess is unlike anyone else's, in my humble opinion. Of course, I am not an expert on Leo. For a broad spectrum of his varied output over the last 35 years, check out a greatest hits album... Posted 19 years ago by michaelc    [ Reply ]
I heard this song and I gave it a 5 and I gave it a 6 and I gave it a 7
I keep expecting him to start busting out with Wild Thing You make my heart sing...

I love Leo Kottke any way I can get him. To the person looking for suggestions (two months ago), I'd suggest his album "Six and Twelve String Guitar." It's a classic.

I love Kottke on guitar, but this is just annoying just annoying just annoying, I love Kottke on guitar but this is just annoying, as embarrassing as Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue"
Shatner should consider doing this song...
All I can think of, upon hearing this song for the first time, that it's a goof on that Josh Joplin song "I Am Not The Only Cowboy" where he repeats the spoken line... I have no idea which song came first, but I'd be suin' someone for ripping off my lyrics!

amen!
It's been a while been a while been a while since I heard this song heard this song heard this song. Still kinda like it or a car key.
I've seen Leo twice in concert so far. He's amazingly shy and reserved, looking awkward and lost a lot of the time, but that's part of his charm. No one can gainsay his talent on a guitar, that's for sure. The man plays like he has 4 hands.
I like this song because i literally drag myself out of bed each morning. ha! And with declaration that he has a Prairie Home Companion sense of humor, I will take the first chance I get to see him!

i highly recommend seeing this guy in concert if you get a chance. of course he's an amazing player, but he's also hilarious - in a prairie home companion sort of way. he's got a wry, common sense sensability. go do it.
Hey, somebody beat me to uploading this song! This is the excellent live version -- I have most of Leo's records/CD's but this one I missed getting until recently. I have seen him live at least 5 times -- if you ever get a chance, don't miss it! (One concert was a free outdoor concert sponsored by my favorite local radio station: The River WXRV 92.5FM out of Haverhill, MA. They are an independent owned station and coincidentally enough, they sound a lot like RP! :D Neil
Damn I like this! First time I ever in my life heard it. In fact, I'm not sure I ever heard Leo Kottke before, although I *had* heard of him. This is one of the reasons I love RP, hearing stuff like this!
It has been long time since I heard Kottke. Great to hear it here. Thanks
OMG! this is now my new favorite song ^_^ Mornings should be against the law....
Heh. You know, I was just thinking, "Hey, I want to hear that song again." And then I did.
hey Bill! wake up! the playlist is a loop!
I love Kottke. He's got a great barritone voice as well.
He sounds like William S. Burroughs. If you have Mr Heartbreak by Laurie Andersen, you will know what I mean. -Adrian
now that would be a terrific song, if you just removed the vocals!
It's funny, it's a bit touching, and the guitar sounds pretty damn good. I can't complain...
Oh, Gawd - haven't heard this in ages. I adore Leo Kottke - he's forgotten more about the guitar than most guitarists ever knew. He's tone-deaf, too - has to tune his guitar to a certain key, or he can't hear it. This song just puts a silly-ass grin on my face, wondering what the hell he was thinking when he wrote it. I'd love to meet the man, just to hear him talk... God bless Leo Kottke and this song. Damn. Gotta say, I'm loving this playlist - Robbie Robertson, Davie Bowie, Leo Kottke... RADIOPARADISE ROCKS!!!

Funny you say that because it reminds me (content-wise) specifically of a song on Magic and Loss, I think it's called Harry Had to Laugh?
I'm laughing, I'm grooving, I'm moving, I'm in awe of the guitar ... I dig it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel the same way and I really liked the album but we're in a minority I think, even (especially) among Kottke purists. In fact, I still remember a good friend and I driving down the highway and him taking it out of the casette player and throwing it out the window.
Omigod, who knew that Jack Nicholson could play the guitar so well!

a snort fort eh, think I'll go pitch me one of those
I don't know why I like this song, but I really, really like it.
Ah, "Geese farts on a muggy day."
I really don't care for this don't care for this don't care for this don't care for this don't care for this
Since we're all friends here, I felt the same way about SRV. Loved the geeetar, iffy on the vocals. Now, I'm a disciple of the whole package! Unfortunately, I discovered him late in life right after the tragic crash. Thankfully, there are volumes of great tunes.

Although Leo talks better than Lou sings, don't get me wrong I like LR. This is the way an acoustic should sound.

Awesome. I'm not one to like a "tone poem" (or whatever) but the pure surreality of this song blows me away. "And there's tears in the bank, and a credit card" is the Best. Lyric. Evar.
There are some who get it. Kotke's guitar playing is of course pure genius, but as for his voice, well, I'm just as apt to think "please shut up and play" as the next guy. EXCEPT THIS TIME. This bit of surrealistic "mean streets of suburbia" existentialism has almost a Beat sensibility. The "boring" repetition is entirely intentional. Kerouac, Burroughs, and Ginsberg probably would have pissed themselves. I'ts a playful but sophisticated and entirely unpretentious concept piece and a tribute to Bill and Rebecca's taste.
I'm liking this. Its different, its eclectic, its eclectic, its eclectic Oh yeah! (pimp)
I'd much rather hear Pepe Hush.
Guitar Riff could\'ve been the inspiration for \"Lullabye\" that god awful top 40 monstrosity. I\'m not particularly fond of either song, though
Yuck. The lyrics are trite stream of consciousness that are bad enough one time around, but unbearable in repetition, repetition, repetition. The talky style of his delivery doesn't help matters. The guitar work is nice, but not nearly good enough to make up for the rest of this horrific song.
I love Leo also, seen him more times than I can count. Yeah, his voice is unusual but it so fits hisbeing and this song is classic Kottke sensibility! I absolutely crack up ever time I hear this one. It can sometimes be difficult spotting genius!
...and your kid has a face like a walnut from the ice cream, from the ice cream, from the ice cream...
\"...and your kid has a face like walnut from the ice cream from the ice cream from the ice cream...\"
I love Leo but not this tune. Leo's strengths lie in his playing, not his singing (or whatever you call what he is doing here is). There are tons of Kottke tunes you could have played that are better than this. .... ....
