"New music"? This one was at the end of the Unplugged CD, ages and ages ago.
Thanks. I knew I had heard this before and couldn't think where.

Eric Clapton is to gritty blues what John Cougar is to heartfelt ballads.
Is that a good thing?

Clapton is a great guitar player.
Indeed. Which is why he oughtta sing less and play the guitar--the blues guitar--more.
I like Robert's version better. Clapton is a great guitar player.
This is why I USED TO like Clapton.... Where did he lose his way??

clapton put out a very cool album in the late '90's called "from the cradle." the whole album consists of covers of blues classics, and the thing rocks like you wouldn't believe. his guitar playing is simply awesome.
if clapton would just stick to blues and stop playing that commercial crap he's been wont to spew on a regular basis, people wouldn't be posting all the negative comments i'm seeing on this board.
btw, his singing on "from the cradle" is also excellent. very soulful.
I agree with all of the above. "From the Cradle" is one of Eric's best efforts.

I like so little of Eric Clapton. It's surprising.

True, listed as "Rollin' and Tumblin'." But this is a new recording. Interesting that it must not be the real name of the song...admittedly I don't know much about Robert Johnson, though. Either way, I dig it.
If you are a blues aficionado, Robert Johnson is "godlike."

This sounds good. I'd pretty much given up on Clapton years ago, but from the sound of this song, his latest CD might be worth checking out.

Funny - I have always been critical of Clapton's voice but I, too, think his voice has gotten better later in life. The Blues format suits his voice better than his earlier solo efforts, which I never really cared for. Cream was and is one of my favorite groups and I think I always compared Clapton's voice to Jack Bruce's great vocals.
Ditto. He's made the most of a voice he's acknowledged to be weak. Re his guitar, I agree re below, he's an excellent guitarist but I can't think of anything that puts him in the superstar class - not Layla, his Cream work or Jeff Beck. I just can't put him in the league of a Jimmy Page. Of course, I'll be the first to acknowledge, I may just be missing the picture.
Would appreciate it if you played Jeff Beck's version (from "you had it coming")...

Clapton is God.
Why? Educate me. What is something by Clapton I should listen to that will blow me away? Once again, IMO, he's an acceptable guitar player, although somewhat without the feeling that differentiates a good from a great guitar player. He's a decent pop artist, and where corporate radio is concerned, they can (and do) play much worse.
But why is he "God"?

Compared to most of his guitarplaying, Clapton's singing was never that convincing, I think. Maybe apart from how he sang the more mellow songs. But here, even in a rather heavy song, it sounds better than ever.

Every day rotation? Sheesh...
It's not that great a tune. And I absolutely don't understand the musical respect people have for Clapton. He's not a great guitar player, he's good, but not great. This was a decent vocal performance, but did no justice to a true blues tune. Way too polished.
This belongs as a pop tune on corporate radio, but doesn't have enough depth for serious RP consideration, IMO.
Go ahead and flame away...

New York Times had a book excerpt (I admit...I haven't read the book!) saying that Johnson's role in pioneering the Blues is largely a sentimental creation. The growth of the blues, even in the early radio days, was much more commercially driven than us cool cats would like to face. Otherwise, cool rendition of the song!
I'd like to send this out to the Drach.....rock on baby!
This sounds good. I'd pretty much given up on Clapton years ago, but from the sound of this song, his latest CD might be worth checking out.
Keep playing this one Bill. I just caught the end of it. I'll rate it when I hear the rest but it sounds like Clapton's high standards so far. Jbuhler, this might sound like something off of unplugged but he has never released a recording of this song before.

Sounds promising. Look forward to this release! Hope it does the title justice.
