The new kid, he's got money
The money I deserve
He's got the goods but he's not good for his word
I should be rolling in it
Up in it working stuff
As for the justice no one knows where it went

I'm gonna toil away
Until my judgment day
I will be rewarded for the good things I did
Believe me every year
There is another one here
Don't you see I used to be the new kid
I am sorry to say
You'll get carried away
Oh
You will be replaced
You will be replaced
I tell you again
Don't get too settled in
Oh
You will be replaced
You will be replaced
(by the new kid)

The new kid, he's got my girl
The girl I used to have
He's got the looks you know, but not from his dad
I should be kissing that girl
We should be so in love
There is no justice
There's just dark stars above

So unique! These guys are such a hoot to listen to; I'll bet they're a major buzz-booster to see live... I didn't get to know them when they started; they didn't get popular here till they contributed "Murder (or a Heart-Attack)" to the KBCO Studio 'C' Volume 11 CD that we all scored as soon as it was released in 2000. It had absolutely noteworthy sessions recorded with Lucinda, Melissa E, Susan T, New Radicals, Cake, Indigo Girls, Indigenous, and more, so we jammed it well and often!
Been a fan from their start when they played Deep Ellum street fairs for free. That was way back in the day when Deep Ellum was happening and Main, Elm and Commerce had music all night all the time.

Cure-ish..... if the Cure rocked instead of moped.    Don't get me wrong -- I love the Cure moping as well when I  need to indulge in a spat of self-pity -- this just rocks though.

The cure!
I used to be the new kid. That was... ah... about 60 years ago
Good tune! I never heard of them, before RP, now I like several of their tunes!  Thanx RP!
Every time the old 97's come on I find myself tapping my toes and thinking "I need to go rate this" usually only to find I already have.
First time I've heard this one. I've liked pretty much every Old 97s song I've listened to and this is no exception. Rockin' song with an intense vocal performance. Easy 8.
Aww, "Johnny come lately..."
I can't the music! WhatsApp?
love it!

I bought this CD in a store...REALLY, an ACTUAL STORE WHERE I PURCHASED MUSIC!!

(it's no longer in business)...

Yeah I do think that too. Probably like Blur too. Strong influences.

Very Pulp indeed, or at least very Jarvis Cocker...

Really, I think the vocals especially are exactly like Robert Smith. They even sound like something Smith would play. Musically too...

They're pretty close.  I had to look to see if it was the Cure, though as the song goes on I can definitely tell the difference.

Yep. They put on a great show too.
New tune for me. Kinda nice.

Hey! I really liked that tune!
gil

The wolves at old Gil's door!
Half the lyrics and music is nearly identical from a similar song in Jesus Christ Superstar.  Not quite ripped off, but oddly close.

I like it!

Rhett! {#Hearteyes}
pushed play at just the right time...

very catchy...
Catchy ditty eh
Old 97s, among my favorites!

Ooh where?  I would LOVE to see these guys live.  I've listened their new album (Blame it on Gravity) more than any other album I owned in 2008.

I just saw these guys at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival here in San Fran this past weekend.  Wow, what a show!  They are fantastic live!  HIGH octane energy!

Parts of this remind me of an Aerosmith tune... Walking in the Sand, I think. Good tune.

Yeah, or, um, the ORIGINAL one by the Shangri-La's: "Remember (Walking in the Sand)."
Oh YEAH!   This is workin' real hard for me on a gloomy Thursday!  Thanks Bill and Rebecca!  9.
Thanks for playing the Old 97s! Agreed, they are phenomenal live.
A little Rhett Miller would be great too. Fireflies (w/Rachel Yamagata) might be a nice starter song for RP :)

Bill plays Rhett and Company occasionally. One of my fave groups. One of the best live shows you'll see, too.

Nice segue (from Ray Charles— Hit The Road Jack)
Waah waah waah wah wah waaah, waah waah waah wahity wah.

I put up with the endless complaints in blues songs because the music is amazing.  This... not so much.

Always grateful for any 97s! Thanks, Bill.

And more from Fight Songs would be awesome. {#Innocent}
I am loving this song!

Old 97s are the shizzle. This album is not my fav, but I still like it. They've got a lot of great tunes. And they're from Denton, but don't hold that against them. c.

WOW! This is great! Never heard of these guys before.
THIS IS SO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

This is the Old 97s cover version of "Poor Poor Pitiful Me," isn't it?
Only a 5 from me b/c it's nowhere near as good as some of there other stuff. I love the Fight Songs album.

The Cure? I can't imagine hearing the Cure in this... I like the Cure and all, but this is completely different. Rhymically, there's no Cure going on here. This is just good foot stompin' rock.

you will be replaced yep. i will. :(
Boo - work smarter not harder, Mr Old 97! Stop playing this tune plz. No seriously, just cut it out mid song. It's ok! :P

Just lowered my rating after HEAVY rotation. Sure, not by corporate standards, but given that it is soo hard to get music uploaded and played, I am a little dissapointed. Lets get more of the music uploaded and then don't play them as often if they don't pass muster in the community. IMHO.

Huh! I do hear the Cure now that you mention it - there's something about the chorus that is kind of Robert Smith-ish to me. I like it - but my fav Old97's song is 'Salome'.

I thought this album was seriously lacking the energy of all the other albums (even Fight Songs was better), but this is a decent track

Sounds exactly like the Cure, and that's a good thing :D
Yes - More Old 97's, Bill!

No, sounds like a pathetic The Cure ripoff. Considering that I don't like The Cure, this is like listening to fingernails on a chalkboard.
Nice string of 7's and 8's!
Very Beatlesque, I like em. Sounds like late beatles indeed.
Definitely one of my favorite bands of the last 10 years. "The New Kid" is one of the better songs off of their latest album.
I was the new kid once...ONCE!
I just went to their concert last night and it was one of the best shows i've ever seen. i liked every song! bravo old 97's! bravo!
My new favorite band
By all means, GO!! They are incredible at their live shows. The songs that sound tame on the albums have so much more energy. You will not regret it :) If for some alien reason you don't have a good time, I might even refund your ticket price! Haha somedude wrote:

This song is on one of the recent Paste samplers, right?
Nice lift of the melody from Remember (Walking in the Sand). Well, the first couple chords anyway. A pretty good tune. Edit: Add a healthy helping of Green Day's "Misery" and you've got it. Still like it though.

That would be the Smiths ;) (almost)
Great, great song. Thanks for playing this!
I really like this song... definitely one of the best from their newest album. That said, I am a HUGE Old 97's fan so I like pretty much everything from them. I bet every male on earth has experienced "I should be kissin' that girl, we should be so in love..." :P

Wow, this was FAST! The CD only came out Tuesday! I saw them sing this live last month, and knew it was going to be a great lp! Thank you, whoever was responsible for the upload!
