I was born in Lil' Rock
Had a childhood sweetheart
We were always hand in hand
I was hightop shoes and shirt tails
Suzy was in pig tails
I know I loved her even then
You know my papa disapproved it
My mama boohooed it
But I told them time and time again
"Don't you know I was made to love her
Built a world all around her"
Yah! Hey, hey, hey
She's been my inspiration
Showed appreciation
For the love I gave her through the years
Like a sweet magnolia tree
My love blossomed tenderly
My life grew sweeter through the years
I know that my baby loves me
My baby needs me
That's why we made it through the years
I was made to love her
Worship and adore her
Hey, hey, hey
All through thick and thin
Our love just won't end
'Cause I love my baby, love my baby. Ah!
My baby loves me
My baby needs me
And I know I ain't going nowhere
I was knee high to a chicken
When that love bug bit me
I had the fever with each passing year
Oh, even if the mountain tumbles
If this whole world crumbles
By her side I'll still be standing there
'Cause I was made to love her
I was made to live for her, yeah!
Ah, I was made to love her
Built my world all around her
Hey, hey, hey
Oo baby, I was made to please her
You know Stevie ain't gonna leave her, no
Hey, hey, hey
Oo wee baby, my baby loves me
My baby needs me
Hey, hey, hey
Oo my baby loves me

I completely agree.  At least, one of the great American-born songwriters. His 1970s output is a treasure.

There's a woman named Carol Kaye who claims to have played bass on this song.  Nearly everyone, including Stevie, has brushed it off as untrue.  This is one of Jamerson's best in my opinion.

Carol Kaye is an exceptional bass player (not just some obscure "woman") who was a member of the legendary "Wrecking Crew".  She played on thousands of recordings, scores of which were hit songs.  I don't think she did much work with Motown but she did a lot of work with The Beach Boys - who covered this song at some time; perhaps she just has a memory lapse about some songs.  Anyhow, great tune.
Gorgeous and wonderful!! {#Mrgreen}
her mother hated me...( get away from that white boy )....I still miss you . Karen B. Pasadena  Ca. jr. hi+ hi-school., early 60s,  long gone by 67. you played flute, I'm a reed man.......

For sure "Godlike".  And he was so young, in his teens.

The weird thing about Kaye is that she has, indeed, played on many excellent songs. Why she persists in claiming credit for songs on which she did not play is very odd, especially considering the fact that there are so  many people who know better.

definitely.

It seems like every other song today is top 40, I hope its not a trend.

I'm convinced he is.
...but she was born to love me first...

God this guy was awesome! Guess he still is, but not like he was.
Bill seems to be on quite the Stevie Wonder kick the last few days...can't say that I mind, although of my own accord I'd probably never listen to him.  That's what RP is for :)
Sir Paul says bassist James Jamerson was a major influence on him. Righteous.

Stevie Wonder ROCKS!!!!

Too bad this isn't played on so-called oldies stations anymore. They've gravitated to 80's stuff, and a lot of the great mid-to-late 60's songs are gone. Quite a shame. I hear a lot of Billy Joel and The Eagles tunes instead of Stevie and Johnny Rivers, even many Beatles'
tunes aren't played any more.. As a former oldies DJ, it breaks my heart. Thank you, Radio Paradise! I'm flooded w/ memories.
There's a compelling argument that Stevie Wonder is one of the great songwriters ever.

Jamerson at his best!

Sucker played all that with one finger. One. There oughta be a law...

Self edit: the one finger was the right or picking hand—not the left that actually fretted the notes. Playing bass with two fingers is hard enough, but one, a holdover from one stand-up bass style, is simply amazing.
Jamerson at his best!
A cloudy, cold SoCal Sunday morning, cleaning the bird cage, feeding the cat, kind of "blah"....then along comes Stevie.  Now me, the bird and the cat are dancing...thanks.....
Now this is the Stevie Wonder I like.....
Among Stevie's best.  Solid 2.
love you stevie!!!
Stevie Wonder anytime.......oh, those wonderful and "innocent" days..........
Gotta love the simple but cool lyrics ("My mama boohooed it"!):

I was born in Lil' Rock,
Had a childhood sweetheart,
We were always hand in hand.
I was hightop shoes and shirt tails,
Suzy was in pig tails,
I know I loved her even then.
You know my papa disapproved it,
My mama boohooed it,
But I told them time and time again,

Built a world all around her"
Yah! Hey, hey, hey.

"Can I jog your memory? "I just called to say I love you . . ." and "Ebony and ivory, . . ."
Stevie had a couple of stinkers. But what a body of work, huh?"

Yeah, I liked called to say i love you more at the time than I do now.  Never liked Ebony and Ivory.  In fact, I though Paul really took a nosedive after leaving the Beatles.  In any event, Stevie had enough excellent songs to overshadow the few stinkers.

Couldn't agree more (though I won't likely have to make your choice, as I won't get an opportunity to go see him). It's amazing how some artists can go so suddenly from making incredibly original and wonderful music, to extruding vile pop crap, in what seems like an eyeblink.

Getting used to having lots of money can do that.  Happily I'll never have this problem...

The tune at bar is from his music-for-love period before the wealth and worldwide fame.  9

genius!

One of the very best from a career that has produced so much great music.  Creepin' is another one of my favorite Stevie Wonder songs, although much less well known.

Ah, man... that summer of '67... cheap transistor radio... emerging awareness of sexuality... and this song!

**sigh**
 {#Good-vibes}

how can you not love this? sigh....
DAMN I love this song! I try hard to limit my "10's" to the very very best of the best. This is absolutely in that category. I really can't think of a dog Stevie's done, but to me, this is the top.

Bill, you raised the bar with this song! Sing it, Stevie!

no, I think that was "Finger Tips pt2"
He kind of fell off the map, but, man, was he right there for quite some time. I'd love to hear some stuff from Fingertips.

Sounds like James Jamerson. Have you seen "Standing in the Shadows of Motown"? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0314725/ Terrific movie with a really good soundtrack. Wonder has Bill played it?

LOOOOOOVES me some Stevie!

Funny, I was in Vienna this week. Listening to this song today makes me think of Austia's own musical prodigy - Mozart!
So cool! I got a book of Motown lyrics out of the library last week.

Wasn't he like 12 or something when he did this?
In all of his songs, Stevie gets to the heart of the matter: passion, musicality, insight. Stevie Wonder will go down in history as one of the greatest American singer-songwriters of all time.
Stevie - he was the most interesting person at the Grammys the other night (in addition to that guy that did those backflips). His speech was like a spoken word poem. Everyone else read in monotone off the teleprompter.
One of my all-time fave Stevie Wonder songs.
Stevie Wonder-full!! More, more, more!!!!
I think we are experiencing a delayed Valentine's Day effect. Love it just the same.
It must be a love song day! Classic Stevie, whenever I hear his voice I smile (except when he's singing with an ex-Beatle).
Bill's playing a lot of stuff that's never been played before this morning. And I think I love him for it.
