Ditto. I love Sonny Landreth's music, and I was only introduced to it a couple of years ago, back when our local "adventurous" radio station, Coyote FM, played his stuff. (Now, adventure has caved in to classic rock, same as most other stations that depend on advertisements and sponsors. Pluh. Coyote FM went from "a work in progress" to "classic rock." Sellout. I'm disappointed beyond the telling.)

A technician does not a musician make. Technically great, but a tune would be nice - a nice solid 2
I give it a higher rating than that, but I do have to agree that this track gets tiring in my personal mix, even when I only hear it every so often. There is something about Sonny's work that really makes the bolded statement above ring true. I suppose if I were 15 again that I'd be really into his stuff, but there's just so much more to listen to these days.

I like Sonny, but this is just a guy who can play with the guitar in his hands letting it do all the work. I do realize I've made a previous comment in this thread that "This boy can play" but that was over a year ago,I'm holding folks to a higher standard these days. If I know what a guitarist is doing without thinking too hard, it means he 's being lazy.

Bought this album thanks to RP, had to order it from my local record shop, and it was worth the wait, and more satisfying for that wait, and to have it in my hand, not simply to download it and move on to something else. This is one to savour. Thanks RP! Support record shops, they have humans working in them, that you can talk to... It's fun!

Virtuosity is one thing, but there needs to be structure as well to deliver a thoughtful composition. Anyone can get up there and just play.

I sort of had an epiphone listening to USS Zydecoldsmobile - the Buffet version with Landreth - a few years back which led me here. Good Stuff!
Pretty good stuff, I find myself comparing him to Eric Johnson, who I have seen play live in Austin Tx. I would have to give the nod to Eric in a duel though; he has a bit more speed. To me, Sonny Landreth is like Nascar while Eric Johnson is like Formula 1.
I swear I occasionally hear the riff from The Cars' Living In Stereo in this song.
Anyone else hear it or is it just me?

Sonny certainly has unique tones--no one else seems to be on his path, and that's okay.
I prefer to think of it a "greasy", but in a very good way. (And for the purists out there, it'd actually be pronounced "greezy", considering it's from Louisiana and all.) As others have mentioned, he's actually scary accurate and tight with his playing, but the sound sorta oozes out and smacks you around a bit. It's all good.
That's what I meant, not messy as in all over the place, just messy as in, so how much do you want then, here it comes and there's more, loosey goosey, ya know, like in a mess of FOOD.

Awesome! Messy is not a word I would use to describe his playing. Quite technical and unique.
I'm looking forward to seeing Sonny at the Ottawa Bluesfest again this summer - his live show is amazing.

after the first few notes I knew this was Sonny and I don't know that many of his songs. I guess his style is quite recognizable, to me at least

Great control there. He moves fast enough that it might seem messy....but I'm willing to bet if you were watching him, it would become rapidly obvious that he knows *exactly* where his hands are at all times.

My GOD that's cool.
Not messy at all, IMO. Very precise. He seems to be hovering near the target, a technique that requires quite a bit of control to make sense. But he's an ACE at starting and stopping on the note structure he's aiming for.

He may be "messy" but there are PLENTY of musicians who want him playing backup on their albums. He is phenomenally talented. Of course, I'm prejudiced, since he is a native Louisianian.
