Look at you, knockin' at my door
What he'd do he hasn't done before?
It's the same old sorry song and dance
You're always good for one more chance, well...
Look at you, knockin' at my door

You saw a light, I saw a freight train comin'
I tried to tell you he was no damn good
You heard bells, I heard the hammer fallin'
He ran you down like I said he would

Baby, pin a rose on me
Baby, pin a rose on me
Baby, pin a rose on me

It's a heavy load, it's a Trail of Tears
And it's a dead end line that drops you here
And it tears me up to see you brought back to him When you don't want to have him,
But I long to give you
It's a heavy load, it's a Trail of Tears

You saw a light, I saw a freight train comin'
I tried to tell you he was no damn good
You heard the bells, I heard the hammer fallin'
He ran you down like I said he would

Baby, pin a rose on me
Baby, pin a rose on me
Baby, pin a rose on me

Nobody likes a smug bastard mansplaining exactly where you went wrong. I would say that the odds of the protagonist going out with the subject of the song are nil.

You're pretty worked up. Sounds like you're speaking from personal experience.

Me too, me too.  Saw Chuck at a small outdoor venue in Carbondale, CO a couple years back.  Great show and got to talk to Chuck and got his autograph on a CD.  Nice guy and into it.  Doesn't get the respect he deserves.

Nice too hear Chuck getting some airtime on RP. Couldn't connect at first, but now I know every song, and always catch the local CP shows. Very few artists infuse their work with as much heart AND humor -while still keeping it all light.

I dare you to find it but Chuck Prophet's cover of the Dream Syndicate's "Merritville" on "From a Man of Mystery" (Steve Wynn) will show you true 'imitation is the greatest form of flattery.'  In fact I dare you to play ANYTHING by the Dream Syndicate - it's way past due.

And one of Chuck's musical heroes is Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate / Miracle 3 / The Baseball Project.  I'll always wondered why we've never heard any of these bands on RP?

I havent heard Chuck in a while.  Need to pull this CD out again.
Chuck Prophet? Sounds more like an imperative for cult followers than a name ;)
This would be good juxtaposed with Alejandro Escovedo. I'd love to hear "Guilty," but I don't think it'd fit here.  I just LOVE Chuck Prophet. Thank you to whoever submitted this one! *blows kiss*
Odd. Just finished watching Sling Blade (again).  Some parallels to this song.  I reckon I like this song OK, uhm hmmm.
Haven't heard Chuck Prophet in a while. This is quite nice! Thanks RP!

Still lovin' this tune. Glad it's still in rotation.
And for the record, it's not a "blame the victim" song, it's a "love is blind" song. When you're in love, you see what you want to see and filter out the rest. No amount of advice from friends is going to change your mind ("You saw a light I saw a freight train coming'. I tried to tell you he was no damn good"). Sometimes we gotta find things out the hard way.

I read in New Scientist (UK serious science mag) a while back that 'bad boys' are popular amongst some women because they're exciting and different, whereas 'nice guys' are preferred for settling down with. So in a nutshell 'bad boys' are ok for no-strings fun shags, and 'nice guys' for longer term relationships where maturity and commitment and genuine niceness are required. Bleedin' obvious, really. The trouble comes when you get the roles mixed up, and try a long-term relationship with a 'bad boy'. I write this as a 'nice guy' who often envied 'bad boys' their success with women, and used to get frustrated that 'nice guys' often got the "I think of you as a brother/friend" line from women I lusted after. In the longer term, though, nice guys do best. I hope.

So, grrlz, do to 'bad boys' as bad boys do to you: f*ck 'em and forget 'em.

Sometimes the victim is equally to blame. Lighten up. Great tune. If you've ever been in the position of "safe harbor" you know it's 100% true.

I don't think he's blaming the victim.  There comes a point when you have  to take a stand no matter what.  Women who are abused and fight back often do get killed or badly injured.  But if they don't fight back, their assailant will eventually kill or injure them anyway, so the woman has no choice but to fight back.

Yep. Great lyrics. Good song. Strong 8. I've known too many people like this. {#Yes}
Anyone hear this guy when he was in Green On Red?  I have happy memories of pogoing furiously at one of their shows in a ratty pub in London back in the late 80s ("when rock music was proper rock"™) .   He seems to have quietened down a bit since then, but good to hear he's still around.
I could listen to this album all day long...

Yeah, well, that's about a third of the story. Mostly, it's about the helplessness a good man can feel in the face of watching a woman he loves be victimized (in a situation where her choices, like it or not, prevent his intervening). Listen again. Closer.
sounds a bit like Beck...
the song has a languid pace and soulful lyrics, very nice . . .
Most outstanding. Been hummin' this for days. A little Mark Knopfler..ish.
I like this. Bill, I am going to file for bankruptcy if this keeps up!!!!!!

Hi voice reminds me of Peter Murphy.
I like it; it's got that lazy JJ Cale feel.
