Never look for the truth in your mother's eyes
Never trust the sound of rain upon a river
Rushing through your ears
Arriving somewhere but not here
Did you imagine the final sound as a gun?
Or the smashing windscreen of a car?
Did you ever imagine the last thing you'd hear as you're fading out was a song?
Arriving somewhere but not here
All my designs, simplified
And all of my plans, compromised
All of my dreams, sacrificed
Ever had the feeling you've been here before?
Drinking down the poison the way you were taught
Every thought from here on in your life begins
And all you knew was wrong?
Arriving somewhere but not here
All my designs, simplified
And all of my plans, compromised
All of my dreams...
Did you see the red mist block your path?
Did the scissors cut a way to your heart?
Did you feel the envy for the sons of mothers tearing you apart?
Arriving somewhere but not here
The drummer is certified, or certifiable. Jeez.
Gavin Harrison. A drum-God.
I honestly do not know how these guys missed on my musical radar...?!?! Just introduced via Radioparadise within a year ago! Something special going on ' here!
Better late than never 😎
The drummer is certified, or certifiable. Jeez.
This song just keeps moving to bigger and bigger moments.
yes, love the build!
don't forget - reunion and tour RIGHT NOW!
check the PT homepage.
I think what you really meant to rate was the guitar break, that's too short by about 20 minutes.
How the hell did I have this rated only 9? 10 all day long.
Deep in your secret heart of hearts, you knew it was a 10 all along...
What he said. And ditto that gloomy rainy Brooklyn day.
I'm conferring an UP and a DOWN on this opinion. I see the point -- overall, tho, this band and "this guy" is the BOMB. The guitar break here is stupendous.
Porcupine Tree -
gotta be a 9.
Rush & PT would make for a great concert.....Who would go first?
Gawd Damn this ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to PSD, I have arrived in a good place
The latest album is just wonderful too, I like this song: https://bit.ly/9NiKHU
......
I have to say I like the Floyd-influenced stuff better, but I don't dislike the harder stuff. I'm arriving somewhere in between, I guess?
Pretty amazing when you think this song primarily only uses 2 chords.
It's not POP!
They are everything to all people
And all of my plans... compromised
And all of my dreams... sacrificed
Good answer!
Yet another great tune from PT.
You shut up!
Lovely.
BTW, I am very happy I bought both of Richard Barbieri's solo CDs, and look forward to Porcupine Tree's autumn 2009 CD with anticipation.
They want to be Porcupine Tree
Bloody awesome song!
Words I'll leave behind if caught in current layoffs...
All my designs, simplified
And all of my plans, compromised
All of my dreams, sacrificed
Arriving somewhere but not here!
Favorite band, favorite drummer!

It is pretty nice.
Oh, it's been back a while - at least since the appearance of PT. I still rotate In Absentia through the iPod regularly.
Oh, well, time for the ipod!
*edit* someone GAVE me this CD right after it came out. Wish I could remember WHO! He hated it and I'm sure glad. I love it!!!
King Crimson! That's it!
Hey Deadwing! How are ya? And why ain't ya in bed?
Read your post on the King Crimson concert, the download, etc. Thrak it is. Thank you!
P.S. Spent a few hours this evening trying to make MediaCoder work so I can rip the bonus cuts off the Lightbulb Sun DVD. A little frustrating so far.....
If I had any sense I would be in bed LOL!
Start with "Schism" and "The Pot."
From my own vantage point, I think PT will always be the more "accessible" of the two simply because their melodies are stronger.
That said, I have lobbied many times to get some Tool (I would start with "Schism" or "The Pot") onto the RP playlist, which I think needs to get a bit heavier.
So I take it that you like the latest Sigur Ros LP?
Rosetta Stoned on 10000 Days blows my little tiny mind every time
I would recommend 10000 Days and Lateralus for first time Tool buyers. If you have heard them at all and you like what you have heard then you pretty much know the drill.
I like Tool very much and I love PT (as you all know)- I can't really compare the two. Tool is very gutteral, raw, and King Crimsonish (they freely admit to ripping off King Crimson's gamelan sound so shut it Tool freaks) and PT is a hell of a lot more melodic and refined.
As much as Steven Wilson would like to be a metal badass, that just isn't going to happen.
Tool are some serious badasses. Word.
Their new album 10000 Days is named that because that's approximately how long Maynard James Keenan's mother lived after having a stroke that nearly incapacitated her completely for the rest of her "life". He saw it as 10000 days of torture by modern medicine and was very affected by her constant struggle to try to stay viable and alive.
I jokingly mentioned to a friend that it was named 10000 Days because that's how long Tool takes between albums before I heard the actual reason they named it that (then I felt bad).

I don't think 10,000 was as strong as Lateralus, but it has some great stuff on it.
I've seen Tool twice in concert, once in 2001 and again in 2003... what an awesome live band. I had a perfect viewpoint of Danny Carey for the second concert, wow that guy can play.
Tool? Are you frickin' serious? I've tried listening to Tool, I can't, for the life of me see how you can compare the two.
I don't hear any 'prog' in Tool, sounds like another incarnation of metallica to me (and is also utter crap).
Yes, I am frickin' serious. What you hear or do not hear is your business.
Metallica are way too pop to be compared to Tool, and Tool's biggest fault that I see is that they try TOO hard to be prog. Metallica tries too hard to be pop, and haven't put out anything BUT pop in about 20 years.
Tool's mediocre heavy stuff though is better than this. Their great heavy stuff, as I said, beats the crap out of this group's heavier stuff.
Overall, there is no heavy prog group that puts out better music than Tool. The entire album of Lateralus proves that. Lateralus is to modern prog metal what OK Computer is to modern prog rock... the bar that must be raised.
And if it weren't for RP, I'd never have heard of this band. THANK YOU, BILL!!!!!!!

Forget Tool? Tool beats the crap out of these guys.

I agree, although Tool certainly have their mellow points. I was only comparing them, however, in the context of "heavy prog" as the other poster mentioned.
Yes, they can mellow it out as well, especially if you consider A Perfect Circle, but still predominately heavy. As for the "heavy prog" Tool has them, for sure. By the way, Tool's live shows will blow your mind.
First off, I want you to know that I am a HUGE fan of Tool, but they are much heavier and darker than PT. I don't know if you can compare the two, they are each at the top of of their level. PT seems to be more melodic and mellow, Tool thrives on anger and a bit more chaotic. Just my 2 cents worth.

and they could do Floydesque prog too - check out the sky moves sideways.

It's an '8' from me! I suspect some of the "heavy metal" comments may be from people that missed, or didn't have chance to listen to, the start of the track - It takes 7 minutes careful build up to reach the really heavy section. Remove distractions, sit down, relax, put on some decent headphones, and let it build - it really takes you there... PT are not a 3-minute catchy-tune kind of group, you have to put some effort in, but when you do, it is rewarded ten-fold. (Don't take this the wrong way, I think if I didn't know this track and came in halfway, I would also be thinking "wtf?" !!) I would love to listen to this played live!
Yup, I couldn't agree more. Only someone joining this song late on could possibly think it's metal, and a careful listen to the intelligent and thoughtful lyrics would dispel any metallic thoughts. PT does use metal/grunge riffs in some of their songs and they act well as a contrast, but they're no more a metal band than my cat is a philosopher. Listen, learn and take your time to appreciate their music, and you'll be well rewarded. 9 from the Nottingham jury.
Thank the imaginary powerful deities that Porcupine Tree isn't Metallica!
