Prince or pauper, beggar man or thing
Play the game with ev'ry flow'r you bring
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion

One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock, four o'clock chimes
Dandelions don't care about the time
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion, blow away dandelion

Tho' you're older now its just the same
You can play this dandelion game
When you're finished with your childlike prayers
Well, you know you should wear it

Tinker, tailor, soldier, sailors lives
Rich man, poor man, beautiful, daughters wives
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion, blow away dandelion

Little girls, and boys come out to play
Bring your dandelions to blow away
Dandelion don't tell no lies
Dandelion will make you wise
Tell me if she laughs or cries
Blow away dandelion, blow away dandelion

Of course many acts were creating "ground-breaking" songs in the 1960's, I was not denying that.  What I wrote was that "lyrically, very few (if any) rock/pop acts were releasing tunes like "Mother's Little Helper" or 19th Nervous Breakdown" at that time." - meaning 1965.  The songs you listed are after the two I mentioned.  "Lola" was released in 1970, but The Kinks were another one of the few acts writing songs with social commentary in the early part of the 1960s.  The initial post I was addressing asserted that The Stones never did anything "original" or "ground-breaking" (which are not necessarily synonymous), I was pointing out my disagreement with that assertion.

Go back and take a listen to the Stones first 3 or 4 albums. Half of the records were just covers of blues songs, usually obscure ones, but still covers. It took a long time before they hit their stride and originality.
Ouch! I guess we all start somewhere...

There are a bunch of good old Stones 45s out there.  I picked up Mothers little Helper the other day for $3.  Way cool to spin this stuff.

Love the Stones but this is awful

I'm kind of in awe of how decent Mick's voice WAS.  His mid-60's recordings are quite "tuneful".  He never really was a great singer, but the notes did flow.

Almost half a century later, it's all about THE SHOUT!

Rather like Van Morrison. Similar vintage.
Brilliant!  Classic+.  The 1960s-early '70s Stones were legendary and incomparable. Post 1978...never mind.
First heard this on CFRA in 1967.

One of my favourite early Stone songs.
Listen to what the Flower People say.

tasty little nugget

dated and silly sounding. kinda like most of the Beatles Catalog.

Surprised at all the hate.

My first reaction, just now, was along the lines of the average as of this date (6).  But after listening to it—I mean really listening—it is GOOD!  And not just because it was an early work of a genius band.  Their genius was already starting to show through back then....  ==> 9

Got me, with a big fat belly laugh! Thanks for that one, lenmoth!

Love it!!!!😍😍😍😍
I don't particularly like it, but I can imagine some one tripping and watching a dandelion that has gone to seed blow away in the wind...

If it never made it to the British album its because singles in those days did not always get put on albums.  Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane for example.

Simply awful in every respect

I am 50% Polish by blood (I swear).  I am not offended.

(if anyone is curious:  by blood 50% Polish, 25% German, 15% Irish, 6.25% American Indian, the rest ?;  culturally, German American mainly)

I can understand why this one never made it to an album - maybe it should reside on the ash heap of history.

I don't even know what that means. 9
I am in the middle of reading Keith Richards' memoir "Life". I cannot tell you how wonderful a read this is for even the casual Stones fan. My wife hated the Stones and read it and now she's a convert

Ummm... Beatles?

And on a side note, this is not one of the few Stones songs I don't think sucks.

The wonderfully messy dissonance in the chorus always got my attention as a sprog, still does.

That depends on what you consider "ground-breaking".  For example: lyrically, very few (if any) rock/pop acts were releasing tunes like "Mother's Little Helper" or "19th Nervous Breakdown" at that time.

Oh, you are SO interesting.
What else can you do?
Ever tried this?  {#Foot-in-mouth}

No band has ever done anything original. After millennia of human music-making there is nothing that isn't based on previous styles. The whole of rock music is based on rhythms from African music, and chord progressions from blues. Even a band like Einsturzende Neubauten likely have predecessors. Unless you can suggest a band that was truly original? And please don't mention the Beatles...

The trick is to mix and match and adapt existing styles to produce new sounds, and the Stones achieved that, and no mistake.

Original isn't always good.  The Stones were good.

No, wasn't on Flowers.  Not on the US version, at least.

The only thing that saves this tune...which I kinda like...is that it doesn't sound too much like The Stones. Almost Mama's and Papa's-ish.
This only gets a 2 because it's the Stones.

Arty, creative, unafraid dorks. Feel the power of the dork side.

Great 60s nugget. According to Wiki, Lennon & McCartney are rumored to have contributed the falsetto backing vocals for this song.

I was 11 years old. Use to sit at a desk in the basement on Wildwood Dr. with my ear pressed to the speaker of a desk radio and write down the titles of songs played over the hours by CKXL.

Wish I still had those journals.

f this is so Beatles like! Must be an early one!

Ah, thems was the days! These boys really had some mojo.........

Thanks, RP!

P.S.  Hats off to K and MJ, seems we're tied in a three way race for first!
