A detective with no lead
Only my dreams know
What's got into me
I run by your side
But I'm out of breath
Lower than the sea
And it's killing me
And it's killing me
If I choose to go with the way I'm feeling
Does it really mean that's the way it is
Is it just a trick that my eyes are playing on my mind
Following the passage of least resistance
Following the pack just to pass the gate
It's a little late for a change of plan
Don't you think?
I got lost following you,
Following you
There's a camaraderie
In a number for my chest
Do this and do that
And forget the rest
But as the tide retreats
It's showing me the shore
There's danger going deeper
But I can't be here anymore
Can't be here anymore
If I choose to go with the way I'm feeling
Does it really mean that's the way it is
Is it just a trick that my eyes are playing on my mind
Following the passage of least resistance
Following the pack just to pass the gate
It's a little late for a change of plan
Don't you think?
I got lost following you
What did I do that for?
Am I an idiot?
What did I do that for?
Am I an idiot?
What did I do that, do that for
I run by your side
But I'm out of breath
And it's killing me
And it's killing me
If I choose to go with the way I'm feeling
Does it really mean that's the way it is
Is it just a trick that my eyes are playing on my mind
Following the passage of least resistance
Following the pack just to pass the gate
It's a little late for a change of plan
Don't you think?
I got lost following you
Time could have stopped
And I never knew
I got lost following you
Following you
I will.. I guess I got lost... westslope wrote:

Instead of concentrating cynically on what you think is missing in the track, why don't you focus positively on the qualities it has? Is that not a better idea? She's a good singer and songwriter. I for one don't appreciate your negativity. Especially that low down shit.

And here was me thinking it was Captain Ahab, albeit looking a lot like Gregory Peck.

I THINK I COULD TRULY APPRECIATE THIS EXCEPT THAT G. H. TUNE 20 MINUTES AGO
You may be amused to know that she's recorded a track called Shanty of the Whale (a cappella) which, after a couple of listens, is quite a beautiful, haunting piece of music.
After seeing the post from fredriley I couldn't resist using one of the greatest literary references for everyday speech. I wasn't aware of the "Shanty of the Whale"; thanks for the pointer. I agree with what you say. I'd add that lyrically it's a very smart song. I think she's one those artists who really benefits from songs that push her voice to the front and are stripped down musically. Unfortunately, some of her really smart lyrics get lost, IMHO, with overly-produced, "pop"y releases.
Substitute "male" for "female" in that sexist rant and see how it reads. If you can't tell one female singer from another you want to get your ears tested. KT Tunstall has a distinctive voice which is easily recognised.
I just noticed your reference to "whaling". Now that's something I've not come across in song backgrounds before.
Maybe she'll write a song titled, "From hell's heart I stab at thee".
We can only hope.

If you think she's just another singer/songwriter, with the greatest of respect and without prejudice, you couldn't be more wrong. (And that voice! Such a voice.)

fred, as always, thanks for the chuckles. -hehe-
She got lost. . .

I'd certainly react like a foolish lovelorn teenager were I to see her in the flesh, I'm sure, particularly if she's wearing that outfit from the Drastic Fantastic cover . She's playing a couple of music festivals in Scotland this summer which I might be tempted to. The Hebceltfest in Stornaway is especially appealing.
Just for Fred. . .

I agree and can't understand the high average rating. . .

Agreed! Its the production, not the artist —
And horstman - it must be nice not to remember the pretty boys sneaking off to the club loo with a handful of poppers while that disco played on and on and on - then the funerals day after day - epidemiology has many dimensions.
The whole CD is that way. Very good.
If it's the synth-pop that's getting on your nerves, try listening to her first two albums which are just her with a guitar, a raw voice, and a backing band. No synth, no over-production, no nothin' - just pure KT. I'm a real fan of the old KT of those albums, and not so much of a fan of her new MOR-ish incarnation. She just doesn't come across with the same feeling as she did before. IMO.

I agree Fred, but I'm still reacting like a foolish teenager when I hear her...this is probably one of the best cuts on this album.

Very true, unfortunately that is in her play list along with lady gaga...in can be very taxing when she is in the car and I let her create her own pandora station.....ha.
Your parents may have had similar reactions to your tastes in music when you were an adolescent...or, maybe not.
Sorry - no axe to grind here... just don't like her music.
Let's see. If you were 12 and heard the Beatles, would you like them, and thus consign that group to some sort of teeny bopper dump (from your present perspective)? I remember when Rolling Stones songs were Top 40. Maybe that says more about the cluttering of the airwaves than the quality of the music.
Back in the 60s you could hear the Stones, the Beatles, the Who, Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, Motown artists, and all kind of other stuff on Top 40 radio in addition to pop and "bubblegum" music. I didn't consider the airwaves cluttered at all.
I am...
I do know that I already liked KT and this seems to show some serious maturation. Maybe that's what I love so much...

Might that be pinche, tambien? ;^)
About Studio Albums: 2004: Eye to the Telescope, 2007: Drastic Fantastic, 2010: Tiger Suit. I think that's a sensible and prudent artist KT, not give the impulse to "bill in a hurry", or by pressure from publishers to monetize success (to monetize the fish!), but let the projects mature, give it time. Sometimes creativity takes time, meditation, and then the ideas come with work. So I think how very important these time intervals, ie in the case of KT, the third in three years. Creating music and songs, this is not making soaps with various flavors ......

I saw The Beatles when I WAS 12! First concert. Birthday present from my Dad. Ticket's were $6 if memory serves me well. Older brother got conned into taking me, as long as Dad bought a ticket for his girlfriend to come along. He wouldn't let me sit w/them either. 12 yrs old in a stadium alone basically, screaming my head off to the most magical of mystery tours I've been on. Still blown away by the band 45 yrs later. Kept every thing from the concert too, the banner, the color photo album book, and the ticket stub. Good times.
btw-I really enjoy KT
This photo from 2005 and the album cover of Tiger Suit. One question - same person? She sure is aging gracefully!

Interesting question, I guess my present perspective to teeny bopper music is slighlty akin to this sounds in this song, but most likely this song will hold up much better over time...

Better they like this than Taylor Swift...

I love KT ... I gather you don't listen much. She is attempting something different here, but her other albums are absolutely as commercial and 'poppy' as this one, which is to say, not at all by the current definition of commercial pop. She never gets much play on over the air radio, but if Drastic Fantastic had come out in the mid 90s, it would have produced a string of top 10 singles.
I've got her first two CDs and have grown to love them, but from what I've heard of this on RP I'm not as taken with the latest CD. It's very polished and well-produced, and I hope it brings her commercial success, but she's gone a bit too MOR for my liking. I'll buy the CD as it's nice enough, but it isn't special as her earlier CDs were. 6 from the Nottingham jury.
Completely ignoring the very clever and incisive lyrics KT's songs usually have, I love this piece. So many hidden meanings - as someone else said, more layers of the onion.
Musically, the track slowly and lovingly wraps itself round you and gently squeezes. I adore the way it slowly but steadily builds to a more upbeat middle section before doing the inverse, delicately slowing to a plaintive ending.
But then, I'll ne'er hear a bad word said about any of her songs - one of my all-time favourite artists. Cracking choice.

KT Tunstall - Better
A little. Reminds me more of Neko Case though. Either way I like it.

I see echoes of your post.
