The animals, the animals
Trapped, trapped, trapped 'till the cage is full
The cage is full
Stay awake
In the dark, count mistakes
The light was off but now it's on
Searching the ground for a bitter song
The sun is out, the day is new
And everyone is waiting, waiting on you
And you've got time
And you've got time

Think of all the roads
Think of all their crossings
Taking steps is easy
Standing still is hard
Remember all their faces
Remember all their voices
Everything is different
The second time around

The animals, the animals
Trapped, trapped, trapped 'till the cage is full
The cage is full
Stay awake
In the dark, count mistakes
The light was off but now it's on
Searching the ground for a bitter song
The sun is out, the day is new
And everyone is waiting, waiting on you
And you've got time
And you've got time
And you've got time

Go to YouTube and search "What's in my Bag". Various artists, including Regina search the record bins at Amoeba Music and talk about their finds. She is very bubbly.
The drummer is ON it!
I'm a big Regina Spektor fan.  Hadn't heard this one before.
A change from her more piano driven music, but I like it.
orange is the new black !!! yeah

I love the show but hate the intro to it.
Twisted crazy fickle girl I am...lol

I really is so much better when you listen to the whole song.    Totally get it.

I love/d the show too but got bogged in the penultimate season where the pared-down cast gets shipped off to the medium-security prison. It just got too grim and filled with inmates backstabbing each other to survive...
Regina! All you need to do is ask!
Hearing this song on the show was the first time I heard someone drop consonants in words ("wai-ing" instead of "waiting"), which everyone under 25–30 seems to be doing these days—SO ANNOYING AND POINTLESS, and actually requires more effort to say—it's unnatural to anyone but Cockney people (who are allowed to do it). Haven't noticed this phenomenon? Listen more to young people.
The subject matter is ok but she's made even better.
Not her best record but I'm in love with her anyway.
Love the drums... well, the toms.
She is very persuasive!
This really sounds like it could be Metric or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Good stuff.
Vibe from "Echo Beach" by Martha&theMuffins". Not bad after all.

Luckily I've never seen the show as (gasp!) I don't do Netflix, so to me this is fresh and exciting.  8 from the Nottinghsm jury.

That's so weird: I feel the same say!
Wow!  Nice to hear the full version after all the seasons of OITNB.  Great tune!
I like both the Netflix show and song...thanks RP

Your comment implied that despite (liking? Not disliking?) this song you usually find her (I'm paraphrasing): trying too hard to be cute.
You’re a commenter I hold in high regard so this comment struck me as out of character (well, that's my perception and you're of course not under any obligation to meet my expectations).

However, please consider that you are dismissing her: 1. In a fashion often used by those who have a bias against female artists (unintentional I hope as other comments of yours don't seem to indicate such a bias), and 2. Undeservedly if you look past the intentionally "cute" surface to the meaningful content beneath.
Peace

Kind of you to say.

I think you're right, in fact; that comment is a little out of character, as I generally don't tend to post about how much I like or dislike a particular song, much less an artist.  I leave that to numeric ratings (which for this song happens to be a 7, since we're specifically discussing it).

My personal reaction to Regina's music has mellowed a bit since I posted that comment, for what it's worth.  I don't necessarily perceive "CUTE!" overriding everything else, and find myself more interested in the music.  So maybe there's hope for me yet.

Also FWIW, this reaction is pretty specific to this artist; any apparent resemblance to comments showing a bias against female artists was unintentional.
Forget about the show...this really is a good song. I like her work.

Couldn't agree more - I always skip it on the show but on here it sounds good.

Sounds a little like Metric.

She's great. I love that she is breaking her boundaries. More young people should do this. You olds should just lighten up.

Yes, that's me, the Cuteness Police.  Don't make me arrest you with my Cuteness Badge.

Of course, I was just describing my personal reaction to this song, in the larger context of all of what I've heard from her on RP.  So there's that.

I thought more highly of you than that sir.

Wow, much less annoying than the lead in for OITNB

perfect theme to a great freakin show
I have to wait 11 months before I see my ORANGE girls again.{#Frustrated}
Found out recently that Taylor Schilling, the lead in "Orange Is The New Black", grew up in my hometown. Blew my mind...

Love OitNB but Jenji Kohan's other series, "Weeds" with Mary-Louise Parker, was better.
Artistry pure and simple.

Of course, it's at least a tiny bit possible that the blind spot is in your eyes. You don't get it. Fine, but this is no more than stating that you don't like something and cannot understand why others do. This is a common experience, but maybe not all that interesting to others. If you have some interesting take on why this is the case, maybe your opinion will carry some weight. Of course, no opinions here actually carry any weight.

Maybe the blind spot isn't where you think it is.

I like this better than anything else I've heard from her here, so far.
Revised rating - from 4 to a 3.

Disagreed! I am glad she gets fairly heavy rotation around here.

So this is what she sounds like when she's not trying to be overly cutesy.
I love this song, and her rendition is good, but I can't shake the feeling that it could be better if recorded by someone else. I know that's terrible to say for an artists original work, but there it is.

Great show. It gives you an idea of how many ways there are to screw up your life while still being a good person. Credit card fraud put more than one character in prison.
Ah, le générique d'OITNB ! Great song, very powerful !
Not a huge Regina Spektor fan and actually skip this song every time I turn on OITNB, but for some reason I'm digging the full version of it on RP today.
I'd just finished watching some of the new season of Orange is the New Black and then turn on the radio and this is playing! :D Love the show and love this song.
{#Good-vibes}
love this song, love orange, can't wait for the new season to start

She's kept her quirkiness to a minimum and focused on a solid theme

They play less than half the whole song on the actual show. (They're still long, but nowhere near the entire song's length.)
Snappy guitars and drums,  quick catchy beat - all reminds me of some of the post-punk 80s bands i liked. .. then the oh-so-disappointing chorus! It totally lets the song down {#Headache}
Still let's give it a 6 :/

Complete shite.
Freaking sick of this song.
Maybe if it plays enough it'll spin itself right out of the playlist...
Nice song.
Please stop playing it every day. :)
Women in Prison.  Orange is the New Black.

This could not be more perfect as the theme.

Love it.

She seems to have grown musically.  Still the unique voice but I like the voice.  Good solid 7 for now.
"...taking steps is easy
standing still is hard" ---so true
Got hooked on "Orange is the New Black" this weekend. Not for the squeamish I'll admit but a interesting show nonetheless. That's why this song took me by surprise I know I heard it before but didn't make the connection right away.
Yay! New stuff from Regina Spektor. =)
First I thought it was an unheard track from The Sounds (Living in America album-ish)
I liked it up to the point where she started screeching the refrain--which doesn't really scan with the melody.
So, she does have some range.
This is amazing!
LOVE this. The frenetic instrumentals combined with the female vocals reminds me a bit of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
I am not a big fan of the song, or the series.  The song is probably less disappointing than the netflix series, but its definitely not great.  I am eagerly waiting for the new season of House of Cards, the other netflix stuff has left me cold.
like this song much better when I'm not confronted with the disembodied eyes of the characters in the opening of Orange is the New Black. It really suits the series, though, very effective.

GREAT series. Worth the Netflix subsription. These song fits it well. Bursts of frenetic energy

Very cool!  I like it!
I'd been ambivalent about Spektor, 'til now -- but that was genuinely exciting.
