I've come to know that memories
Were the best things you ever had
The summer shone beat down on bony backs
So far from home where the ocean stood
Down dust and pine cone tracks
We slept like dogs down by the fire side
Awoke to the fog all around us
The boom of summer time
We stood
Steady as the stars in the woods
So happy-hearted
And the warmth rang true inside these bones
As the old pine fell we sang
Just to bless the morning.
Hot sand on toes, cold sand in sleeping bags,
I've come to know the friends around you
Are all you'll always have
Smoke in my lungs, or the echoed stone
Careless and young, free as the birds that fly
With weightless souls now.
We stood
Steady as the stars in the woods
So happy-hearted
And the warmth rang true inside these bones
We stood
Steady as the stars in the woods
So happy-hearted
And the warmth rang true inside these bones
As the old pine fell we sang
Just to bless the morning.
We grow, grow, steady as the morning
We grow, grow, older still
We grow, grow, happy as a new dawn
We grow, grow, older still
We grow, grow, steady as the flowers
We grow, grow, older still
We grow, grow, happy as a new dawn
We grow, grow, older still
I'm amused that you picked up on RA1749's spelling of 'volatile', but you can't spell David Gilmour's name.
Seems a bit of a blatant rip off of Pink Floyd's Goodbye Blue Sky at front end....
Both includes guitars... Is that enough to be a blatant rip off?
Captain Kirk
Being such a literal rip off of Goodbye Blue Sky moves it out of "creative license" to uninspired and copycat in my view.
Came here to be the first to point out the first minute of this song is a total parallel of PF Goodbye Blue Skies - but it appears many beat me to it. Either way, I like both that intro, and the Jose Gonzalez style song after
I hear no real similarity with Goodbye Blue Sky.
If you're a guitar player, if you must draw your inspiration from the work of other artists, you could do worse than David Gilmore.
Sheldon Cooper has just reminded me that stars are rather volitile and in constant motion. Therefore to be "as steady as a star" is an ironic statement that suggest the singer is rather unstable.

And flowers are not necessarily 'steady' either. Hmmm, maybe a greater message woven in here. Human perception? Regardless, still a 9 and a volume increase every playing.
again, I am wrong. I was going to blame this on Cloud Cult or maybe even Elbow...I find this weird and grating, though it ranks a solid 7 by the RP crowd. I may catch on...
No need to "catch on". Like whatever you like and dislike whatever you choose.
Just do me a favor, OK? If you dislike something, there's no need to work up a h8ter comment.
One of the few songs I've ever heard written about summer camp, yes?
Personally, I think that's unlikely. He's from England, where we don't have 'summer camp'. More likely he went on camping holidays with his family.
Look, mummy. There's an airplane up in the sky.
Glad I'm not the only one who heard this in their head during the intro.
Di-di-di-did you hear the falling bombs?
Ha! Well... the NORTH STAR has been used for centuries for navigation ... so that would suggest that at least with regard to our own planet, the stars are indeed "steady".
weird how few recent comments there are, considering how often it's played.
not often enough!
Sounds similar or "inspired", especially the vocal adornments, but it's a different chord progression, not that that matters to most people here.
Definitely hear it as well. "Did-did-did-did you see the frightened ones......"
Me too - heard it straight off the bat. Thought it was going to be a slow motion cover.
Yup
Everything is relative. Even the most stable person in your life is going through so many things, but the the most important thing is how hard they work to stay in your orbit (and vice versa).

and Jose Gonzales...
I too hear Goodbye Blue Sky at the opening of this tune every time it comes into the rotation. That said, I still enjoy this Ben Howard song, though not at the same level as the aforementioned Floyd tune!

This sums up how I felt when I discovered RP!
...set me free - in no small way either...
I was just thinking the same... went online to see who had made a cover and then they started singing

....... big yes - best thing to come out of Totnes
Excellent track off a stellar album.
Glad I'm not the only one who heard this in their head during the intro.
