Moving on, moving on,
isn't that what I'm supposed to do?
Just hold it back and keep moving on.
Pushing on, pushing on,
isn't that what I'm supposed to do?
But it's so hard to keep pushing on.
I'm moving on, moving on,
isn't that what everybody tells me I gotta do?
But it's so hard moving on without you.
Every morning waking in a fever wet and shaking,
my heart inside me pounding, muddy water all around me.
Cold, shocked and speechless, can't anybody reach us
and why, oh God, why?
Go down, go down, Moses,
go down to the city of New Orleans.
Go part the muddy water.
Let your people cross over.
Go down!
I'm moving on, moving on,
that's what I'm trying to do,
just holding back and moving on.
Keeping on, keeping on,
that's what I'm trying so hard to do
but it's so hard keeping on without you.
Gone and lost my patience with this hopeless situation,
yeah, I'm alive, I'm a lonely sole survivor.
Spared me for some reason so I'm picking up the pieces
but why? Oh God, why?
Go down, go down, Moses,
go down to the city of New Orleans.
Go part the muddy water.
Let your people cross over.
Go down!

Heartfelt for NOLA.
Whatever.

Hey, I like Natalie Merchant, but I think you overplay her (I think I hear her here every day). There are a lot of great to excellent female vocalists - how about some Annie Lennox, Chrissie Hynde, Shawn Colvin, sade, Enya, Linda Ronstadt, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry....just saying..
This is one of her best though, I will grant you that, so thanks.

Yeah, I gotta agree, I like this song.
Not saying I'm a fan of Natalie, casually maybe, but all the haters take a look at avg rating and see you are in the minority, but thanks for the input lmao

H8 is not wisdom, nor is an opinion a statement of fact.
Try an edit like so: "Even in her heyday she always sounded like an amateur to me. Twenty years later things have not changed in my opinion".

Ever since her days in 10,000 Maniacs, I've enjoyed her creative style and while it doesn't seem to appeal to many, it does to me.
Even in her heyday she always sounded like an amateur. Twenty years later things have not changed.

Nope, I thought so as well, but apparently it is gospel singer Corliss Stafford

full disclosure, I'm not the biggest fan, but not feeling this fully works.

Another rare for me example of Natalie executing well on a good song by recognizing her vocal limitations. 6 or 7
This song feels like she needed to tick the box on her recoding contract beside 'wrote a song about New Orleans flooding that incorporates obligatory reference to Moses'.
There's a crew making a racket outside my window taking down a tree. I can barely make out the music, but I heard enough to think, "That sounds like Natalie Merchant wailing in the background."

Dislike saying it, but Natalie sounds bored and dated in this tune.
Doesn't she always sound bored?
She's a Yankee singing southern. However, I still like Natalie, her voice and her attachment to the message she carries in her song choices.
Great
nice one
sounds like Joan Armitrading, strong sound whoever
I just bumped this to an 8. Maybe next time I hear it I'll buy it.
is this a duet with Annie Lennox?
This song is good for the ears...
This has nothing going on.

Anytime I stop what I'm doing and turn up the volume, I seriously reconsider my previous rating of a new song. Bumped it to an 8.
When she's on, she's on. When she ain't, she ain't. This falls into the later category.
Very nice !
Despite a previous opinion I LIKE this song; great arrangement with nice counter harmonies,,,smooth voice. A 7 leaning toward 8.
