You sang your swan song to the dogs
'Cause they made mincemeat of the dreams you hung your hopes on
So you cut it out, well your sins cost
While money talks to your conscience, looking like a fool for love
Dear life, I'm holding on
Dear life, I'm holding on
How long must I wait
Before the thrill is gone
You drove your Rolls into the swamp
You stole away like a thief, reeling from the sticker shock
Of the price they put upon your soul
You buy it back from the burning ashes of the devil you know
Dear life, I'm holding on
Dear life, I'm holding on
How long must I wait
Before the thrill is gone
Dear life, come and pick me up
Dear life, I think the button's stuck
Dear life, I think it's gone too far
Dear life, please lower the bar
Lower than the stars
Dear life, I'm holding on
Dear life, I'm holding on
How long must I wait
Before the thrill is gone
'Cause they made mincemeat of the dreams you hung your hopes on
So you cut it out, well your sins cost

I'm a medium-large fan of Beck, but I missed this one. I like it a lot!

Been a Beck fan since I first heard his music on "Guero" -- then had to play catchup with his earlier music.
My wife and I saw Beck/his band in Texas this past summer... scorching music with outdoor scorching 100+ deg temps to match.
The concert was fantastic, but I'll have to say .... the companion light show / computer graphics were absolutely amazing. Truly complemented the feel and vibe of Beck's music!

same. i really liked this whole album, too.
i find i'm appreciating him a lot more lately than i did a while ago. i mean, i always liked his stuff, but i never paid a whole lot of attention.
right before covid i was working at this job and i could listen to music on headphones as i worked sometimes and i remember turning on spotify and getting a beck radiostation going, playlist, whatever...it was really cool. lots of stuff i never had heard before.
These days I am really re-appreciating the Beckster, a true master of alchemizing pathos into wisdom -- and I wonder what he'll do next!

This album hit me when I was traveling from California to Germany and then onward London… It kept me sane…

A guy in the pub offered me 4 haunches of venison for £100. I wondered it it was too dear...

This guy is simply a genius. Wasn’t ready for him in the 90s, I had to catch up with him. Love all his styles.
Are you me?
ugly person, interesting musician

Dear Bill .
I think your buttons stuck. This is the second go round for this set

Beck channeling his inner Elliot Smith here, I'd say
The way he bangs on the piano with angst.
Brilliant! I love you Beck!

I kind of skipped Beck all my life but I like it
Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion,
for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.
this is simply good to hear, godlike 10 for this song

Play Colors!
Beatlesesque. Had this been by the actual Beatles, just imagine its fame. What style of music is Beck incapable of I wonder.
fifa vibe...
Actually I love Beck like this the most.
I'm kind of tired of hearing his reverbed vocals in mellow tunes.
Thumbs up!

Agreed. This felt like a real party album; a far cry from Sea Change.

Much like David Bowie, Beck is quite the musical chameleon, always changing.

I love this song. Thank you, Mr. Campbell.
I've bumped my already bumped 8 to a 9 today. Beck songs have been trending upwards in my listening enjoyment, still don't have any 10s from him and a lot of 8s and 9s. Long Live RP!!
The title track is da bomb!
Great idea for an artist who's been down every road from Dylan to hip hop to plug back into the Beatles. What a great song.

Late Beatles guitar in there mix with a little Billy Preston. Can ya hear it?
The piano at the beginning reminded me of the opening to "Lady Madonna"...
Lots of reasons not to like him (nicks other people's styles, Scientology etc) but Beck is becoming my guilty pleasure.
Absolutely! I've been saying this song sounds SO much of the Beatles. jacopo_7 wrote:

At last year's Grammys, he was hanging out and party hopping with Paul McCartney. Sir Paul's style certainly rubbed off...

In follow-up I bought this one, along with Robert Plants latest "Carry Fire." Talk about yer whip-lash set of music to listen to over the holidays, eh? Anyway, over all this latest CD out of Beck ain't bad, in a pop'ish kind'a way. I'd recommend it.
I must admit that I've never been an especially big fan of this guy. But my ears are sayin' this is a good one. I might have to check out the CD.

Indeed. Ear-catching. Sounds like George Harrison guitars. And Abbey Road chorale vocals.

Nothing like some NEW BECK, and I am excited by it! I can't get enough of that atmospheric soundscape there at the end. Beck rocks!
Love this song and the new album. Can't believe we were all getting crazy with the Cheez Whiz 20+ years ago and he is still making great music.
GOLD
He's re-invented himself yet again, and sounds great. Cool, catchy, and sing-along-able. I look forward to hearing more of his new stuff

This played nicely right after side two of Abbey Road. Had a definite Leon Russell/Concert for Bangladesh vibe to it.
Nice chord changes..
Pretty cool. That "bouncy" piano bit at the beginning made me think he may have had Ben Folds playing on this album. I guess it's Greg Kurstin; he's a busy guy these days. Interesting time signature change in the middle.
More new stuff!
this guy never stops impressing ! zesty
Pretty Cool New BECK! Looking forward to seeing him live in few weeks opening for U2
New Beck, YES!!! Thank you Bill.
New Beck!
