There's a man who's been out sailing,
In a decade full of dreams.
And he takes her to a schooner,
And he treats her like a queen.
Bearing beads from California,
With their amber stones and green.
He has called her from the harbor,
He has kissed her with his freedom,
He has heard her off to starboard
In the breaking and the breathing of the water weeds.

While she was busy being free.

There's a man who's climbed a mountain,
And he's calling out her name,
And he hopes her heart can hear,
3,000 miles he calls again,
He can think her there beside him,
He can miss her just the same.
He has missed her in the forest,
While he showed her all the flowers,
And the branches sang the chorus,
As he climbed the scaly towers of a forest tree.

While she was somewhere being free.

There's a man who sent a letter and he's waiting for her reply.
He has asked her of her travels since the day they said goodbye.
He writes, "Wish you were beside me, we could make it if we try."
He has seen her at the office, with her name on all his papers,
Through the sharing of the profits,
He will find it hard to shake her from these memories.

And she's so busy being free.

There's a lady, in the city, and she thinks she loves them all.
There's the one who's thinking of her,
There's the one who sometimes calls.
There's the one who writes her letters,
With his facts and figures scrawl.
She has brought them to her senses,
They have laughed inside her laughter.
Now she rallies her defenses,
For she fears that one will ask her for eternity.

And she's so busy being free.

There's a man who sends her medals,
He is bleeding from the war.
There's a jouster and a jester and a man who owns a store.
There's a drummer, and a dreamer,
And you know there may be more .
She will love them when she sees them,
They will lose her if they follow.
And she only means to please them,
And her heart is full and hollow like a cactus tree.

While she's so busy being free.

Like a cactus tree-
Being free.

Reminds me of my youth, when I was so busy being free.
Happy 80th Birthday Joni!
I confess that I have *no* Joni Mitchell albums. I will rectify this: what a beautiful voice, perfectly in-tune and expressive singing of some lovely songs, often with the slighly surreal edge.
May Joni be well and happy for many, many years to come.

Hahah this is an explanation I can work with. Her voice is one of the... I dont know 10 voices on this planet since voice recordings exist, that can calm down a tank, that makes you sad and happy at the same time. Fantastic!
how did I have this at 7?!?
That's a GREAT F*&KING song.
SUPERB!!  ICONIC!!
One of my favs of Joni’s and I have many. Long ago I learned it is better to listen beyond just the voice but to the intonations, lyrics and the instruments that convey a space, a feeling, something that reaches beyond. Joni is a master at such, along with Neil Young, Dylan and Paul Siebel among others.
I know very few artists who can define in a few exact brushstrokes what it's like to be a woman living her own life after the conservative traditional structures were left behind, by so many, in the 60s.  It's almost scary, because she names the feelings in that very brave and lonely place.
Admittedly I'm not the biggest Joni fan (totally respect her songwriting skills but her voice often does not resonate with me), but this was really nice.

Joni haters must have something against her person, or the era that she represents, etc. With all the respect I have for differences in opinions, I objectively think nothing can be reproached to her singing.

I think most people who dislike her music dislike it because of the way it sounds.  Most criticisms I've read and heard about her are because of the way she sings.  There are not really many personal or "era-related" reasons.  Most people like or dislike music because of the way it sounds - it's that simple.
I saw her tour Court and Spark. Quite possibly the best concert ever.  Rates right up there with the Yellow Brick Road tour.
I asked in another comment for another song who her backup was and I was told she overdubbed her songs from this era herself... surely she is on this song right?

Wow, just wow....

I can't imagine anyone actually 'hating' her. She has so much technical excellence. Not liking her, sure. That's a matter of taste. I'm a singer and play guitar which gives me a huge appreciation for her vocal range and guitar skills, in all kinds of nonstandard tunings. Voices with her effortless range are rare: Karen Carpenter, Hannah Reid, Adele are others. Joni can effortlessly move from chest to head voice in a single note. I listen to that in awe. Plus she's a great songwriter and visual artist. A lot of her tunes are not mainstream. That's part of her attraction for me but folks wanting something predictable might not like it.

That's saying nothing about how she stood up to rampant sexism in the music industry and to a great extent blazed a path for women who followed. Her effect is immense - even today groups like Haim credit her as a major influence.

If I could sing and play half as well as her I'd be ecstatic... and probably be a household name as well.

With all respect, as it goes, what a load of tosh!!! Joni doesn't do much for me musically (though I didn't 'skip' this one...) but I know nothing about her personally to have anything against. I also like a fair few artists or bands from the 70s and around.

It takes all sorts and RP can, indeed SHOULD, play any bloody thing they want cos they've introduced me to a shed-load of fantastic new (to me) music

Just sayin' If you pay attention to the lyrics and hear the poetry and the insights they offer into the female psyche, it's more important than the actual music, which is certainly awesome enough melodically.

Not to mention her guitar work.

Joni rips her blouse open and shows us her heart. No one like her.
It just doesn't get any prettier than her voice!
This was the final track on the album, which should really be enjoyed straight through, in entirety.  The poignancy of the chord progression of this song always left me with a little longing, and looking forward to the next time I would play the album.  Still does.
Joni's been a force in my musical life since my early teens in the 60's. No one else matches her.

Joni often overdubbed the harmonies, especially on these early albums.

Absolutely. Beautiful.
Magnificent. Beyond words. Used to great effect in the film A Walk on the Moon with Viggo Mortensen and Diane Lane.

Yeah, just try to sing along with her and you'll find out right quick how strong a vocalist she is.

I have always found folk Joni more satisfying than jazz Joni.  I suppose liking folk music in general more than jazz (at least jazz with vocals) could have something to do with that.  She is an amazing talent regardless and this is just magical.

An inordinate amount of Joni haters in the comments below. I don't get that. This is a lovely song. Did they bother to read or heed the thoughtful and evocative lyrics? Oh, sorry, that's a rhetorical question. The answer is in their cynicism.
Vive Joni!

I still have original vinyl.  Lots of gems on her debut.  This is the last track and always left me with the feeling of looking forward to hearing the whole album again soon.
Joni in the middle of the folk singer troubadour movement, Singer and guitar, very simple but the lyrics are what counts. they let you dream.

PSD and quit bitching.  A great song.

And this my friends is how to sing.
Joni is my soulmate, since I first heard Blue in 1971. I have everyone of her albums on vinyl, duplicated them all on CD and have several of her published songbooks for piano. I try and play them as best I can. I declare myself her biggest fan. I have one big complaint though. Joni drew and/or painted all of the cover art for almost every album she ever released. Joni's paintings are awesome, in my opinion, but....if you visit her website you will find a lot of her art and some of it with a teaser to sign up to receive an email when they might be released as prints. I signed up 8 years ago.....still no email announcing their release for purchase. I've visited numerous poster websites to find prints of her artwork. I can only conclude that Joni doesn't ever want to commercialize her art, i.e. possibly until she's gone from this planet whence my guess is she'll donate the proceeds from her art to a cosmic charity or to her long lost daughter that she reconnected with a decade ago. I still love ya Joni. Guess I'll just have to stare at my 33 1/3 LP record covers.
Sweet wonderful voice, great lovely poetry that was so much a part of the sixties as many have mentioned below.
Still beautiful today.
Note the diction.  Every word clear , understandable, no mumbling.  Much more to the technical mastery here, but Joni & Barbra Streisand both know their diction.

It is just amazing how much so many artists owe to Joni. So much of her lives in those who came  after her.
There is much in Joni's vast range of music that I have always appreciated but something about this song always touches me deeply, forcing me to pause and listen often reflecting on the past. Any song that does that gets a 10
Joni is one of the all-time greats. A genius imo.

This is a great song from an album that gets overlooked by her later recordings. Amazing how great she was right from the start. A lot like Neil Young and Richard Thompson in that regard. Joni, Neil and Richard wasted no time.
Her 70th birthday was 4 days ago.  Still a helluva woman.
That voice! Sublime.
